Latest Breaking News - Health - Viewing: Your Proper Exercise Program Is Not Optional

2009-08-16

We all know that exercise is essential to living a long and healthy life so it is strange that only 15% of adults get enough proper exercise. You could liken not exercising to parking in a tow away area. You think you can get away with it until you end up with an expensive ticket.

Inactive desk jobs, television addiction, computers and convenience devices coupled with our fixation on cars, have created a sedentary world with more than 8 out of 10 adults either inactive or underactive. Small wonder that the world is in the midst of an obesity epidemic and 50% of the population suffers from at least one chronic 'lifestyle' disease.

There is a high price tag to pay for not getting enough proper exercise adversely affecting the function of the muscles, bones, brain, heart, blood vessels, liver, the immune system and every other organ and system in the human body. An inactive person is more likely to suffer from anxiety and depression, find stress harder to manage and lose self confidence and self esteem.

Without the stimulation of vigorous movement that works the muscular system the body senses that you don't need your strength any longer so you are automatically switched into 'shutdown' and degeneration mode. This movement is essential for the release of hormones such as human growth hormone, a chemical messenger that instructs the cells and tissues to repair, rebuild, replace and renew.

From the top of your head to the bottom of your toes, being physically active is the stimulus that gets the human body to work at its best and prevents it from deteriorating.

By not being active it affects the body systems right down to cellular level where the ability to transfer oxygen from the bloodstream to cells is diminished. And if you can't get enough oxygen out of your blood the quality of your entire life is affected.

With the stakes so high, every adult needs to understand and recognize how essential proper exercise is to their health. People do know this intellectually, but don't seem to take the steps to put it into action. The bottom line is that it is not optional but a necessity particularly in the second half of life if you want your health span to equal your life span.

If you are new to exercise and wish to get started on a proper program that includes mostly strength training exercise it is important to seek the help of a fitness professional. Not only do you need to do the exercises properly you also need to do them with the right level of intensity otherwise your results will be minimal.

The damage done by lack of exercise is huge and life threatening. Statistics show that it costs much less to stay strong and fit than it does to heal health ailments and sickness brought on by not doing enough proper strength building and maintaining exercise.

To respect and value your own body and health and to provide it with what it needs to keep you healthy is the least expensive commodity and such an easy thing to do. It is also the highest calling or responsibility we can have to ourselves. So take it upon yourself to just do it so you can enjoy a long and healthy life.
