Have you visited the eye clinic this year? Our eyes are the most incredible organs in our bodies, working effortlessly to bend light into the nerve impulses that the brain converts into visual pictures. Unfortunately, we take our vision for granted, giving no thought to the actual processes that allow us to see. Unfortunately as we age, so do our eyes. The strength at which they functioned at when we were 22 is different to their ability at age 40. Eye conditions generally become prevalent from around the age of 45. You can or may have noticed that you need to strain your eyes or that you cannot see as well as you did and in some cases, a patient may need to pay a visit to the eye surgeon. With advanced laser eye surgery, we can correct some conditions and they can even be eradicated in some instances, or improved with treatment or surgery. There are measures that can help you to combat the ravages of eye degeneration. Consume plenty of A, C and E vitamins as well as carotenoids (red, orange and yellow vegetables/fruit). Also include selenium and flavonoids to your diet, these are found in pulses, fruit, vegetables, wine and green tea. It is also vital to have your eyes tested annually. An eye test is often the only way that a disease can be detected. You can keep your eyes healthy by: wearing sunglasses when outside; using goggles to keep your eyes safe in water; visiting your eye doctor once a year; getting plenty of sleep to rest your eyes; use your glasses if you need them to read/drive in traffic; as well as wearing sunscreen if you enjoy spending time in the sun - sunscreen protects the skin around the eyes from water loss which leads to puffy eyes -applying sunscreen will help to avoid this. Additionally, if you are a smoker then it is best to quit smoking; this habit can increase your risk of retinal and macular degeneration. Glaucoma is a condition that affects many people -the pressure inside the eyes rises, damaging the optic nerve. This diminishes visual ability that can remain unnoticed until permanent damage has been done. Have your eyes tested regularly for this condition especially if other family members have it. Presby Lasik Laser Surgery is an eye procedure that corrects the eyes so that the patient no longer has to rely on glasses due to Presbyopia. As we age, the ability to focus near and far distances decreases. At 40 years of age, your once healthy eyes begin to struggle to read, and at 50 many people need glasses for reading and intermediate vision. With Presby Lasik Surgery, Presbyopia can be corrected as the laser reshapes your cornea into zones, (near, far and intermediate vision). Your brain selects the zone needed to see an object or person, depending on how close or far away they are. Our vision helps in every aspect of our daily lives, and without our vision we would be at a serious disadvantage. Looking after our eyes often goes ignored until it is too late, therefore have your eyes tested at least once a year when you reach the age of 40.
