As we get more miles on our age clock we may wonder why a body of a 60 year old person looks so different than a body of a 30 year old. Although it is more wrinkled and saggy on its outer casing the real problem lies in what is happening to the stuffing on the inside. When muscle and bone shrinks, bodies sag and posture slumps. Not so long ago it was believed that the gradual loss of muscle that starts slowly and increases its rate after the mid 20's was an inescapable part of the aging process. You were on a downhill run trapped in a body made up of more fat and less firm muscle and the older one got the worse the situation got as well. The main reason for this loss of muscle and bone is that we stop using it and production of the body's natural anti-ager human growth hormone (HGH) declines as well. Without the stimulation of vigorous muscle 'work' there is not the release of this special hormone that instructs worn out cells and tissues to renew, repair, replace and rebuild. So the long process of decay and degeneration sets in along with a downward spiral of health. There is only one thing that will stop this process dead in its tracks and that is strength training exercise which can reverse muscle and bone loss, making human bodies work better and become leaner and younger. This is the only type of exercise that will stimulate the release of HGH helping your body build more youthful muscle tissue and use up excess flabby body fat. However, to get these bursts of "youth' hormone takes more than a few bicep curls. Studies show that the exercise session does need to be reasonable intense (degree of effort used) taking about 40-50 minutes twice a week to get the very best results. As little as 8 different strength training exercises targeting major muscle groups are what do the job the best. Big exercises that work multiple muscle groups together like squats of all types chin ups, dips, overhead presses and dead-lifts rather than little exercises that work small muscles like calves or biceps. This is much less scary than it sounds. For one thing you get to rest for a minute or so in between each exercise and for another, no one expects a beginner to work out at a high level straight away. You start with a basic program and work your way up to the more advanced exercises ideally under the guidance of a fitness professional. This is a fantastic investment in your own health and well-being given the evidence that regular strength training exercise retains your strength, helps maintain a healthy weight, and keeps your bones strong along with greatly reducing your chances of needing a nursing home and a Zimmer frame down the track. So, all you need to do now is go to your local gym or fitness center and get yourself started and never stop. You will be so glad you did. As each year passes you will be getting stronger not weaker as you will if you neglect to take care of yourself in this way.
