Latest Breaking News - Health - Viewing: Why Would You Want To Risk Serious Disease By Staying Sedentary?

2009-07-02

Desk jobs, television addiction and convenience devices like remote controls, washing machines and vacuum cleaners coupled with our reliance on cars, have created a sedentary world. More than 6 out of 10 adults are either inactive or under active. This decline in our physical activity levels is causing a huge deterioration in our health.

Many people seem to be in some sort of denial about their need for physical activity. They think it doesn't really matter if they have no planned exercise program and that they will suffer no negative consequences without it. These same people view an exercise program as a choice, an option, a luxury or something that you do if you happen to have the time.

Although there is a lot of information out there about this subject, the medical establishment is not going out of their way to inform people of what will happen to them if they fail to partake in regular vigorous physical activity. Could this be perhaps that our "health" system or rather or "sickness treatment system" actually needs lots of sick people to feed the money hungry monster.

Our reliance on doctors and drugs means that we assume they will fix us up if the wheels should fall off. This takes the responsibility off us so we don't have to bother exerting ourselves with structured exercise as a form of preventative medicine. But by the time the human body shows signs of serious disease after decades of it smoldering away it is often way too late to fix it.

The damage done by lack of exercise is huge with premature aging and an increased risk of serious life threatening disease and illness that could well lead to long term disability or a premature death. The suffering from just one epidemic lifestyle disease such as cancer causes massive human suffering and sheer terror to its victims and their families.

It is now known that becoming physically strong and fit reduces the risk of this one disease by at least 50% yet people tend to brush this off and just hope they won't become a victim. Isn't it a bit like playing Russian roulette? How could anyone be prepared to pay the high price of risking getting this one killer disease to avoid being physically active for 2-3 hours per week?

A proper exercise program that contains at least 60% strength training exercise is absolutely essential if you wish to live a high quality of life regardless of how long you may live. It is simple not possible to achieve this by remaining sedentary. Every single cell in the human body needs the stimulation of vigorous movement to activate the hormones that are necessary to instruct the processes of repair, rebuilding and renewal.

These are the very things that keep us healthy and without this happening there is an accelerated rate of aging, decay and degeneration. Much of this will happen on the inside where you cannot see it but you will notice that you get slower, weaker and more fragile. And as you get older in years the rate that this happens gets faster and more unrelenting.

Each of us has so much control over this process. It is up to each of us to take the responsibility to take the necessary action to delay this as long as possible. There is no doctor, drug, surgical procedure or medical treatment that can take the place of a proper exercise program in keeping you youthful at any given age.

The solution is so simple; seek the help of a fitness professional to get help in setting up your exercise program and in teaching you correct exercise technique. If you try to wing it alone it is unlikely you will be able to perform a proper program with enough intensity for it to be effective or to make any real difference in your health.

Keep in mind that as time slips by your body and your health isn't just frozen in time, waiting to get moving. It's fading but the rate of this fading is up to you. It is in your hands, as is your willingness to act on it.
