Before the Internet existed, the idea of a furniture store in Indiana importing items directly through a personal contact of the owner sounded almost science fiction. Teenagers who hold friendships together across continents was an even more ludicrous concept. Then along came Facebook. The Internet has changed the way many of us think and feel about, as well as communicate with, other cultures. The only real roadblock that remains is the cost of calling international long distance. Go to Canada for a week and text message friends and family back home. Just see if your bill does not skyrocket for every transmission that comes out of your phone. (Fifty cents per sent message is not unlikely.) Now thanks to voice over Internet Protocol, or VoIP for short, this problem is quickly becoming a thing of the dark ages…you know, the time before the Internet was invented? While astronomically high rates still exist at other service providers, VoIP phone service providers make it possible to communicate for free, or at the very least, a more affordable price than ever before. Let's look at just how much more competitive VoIP phone service is making it to do business or hold together friendships across continents. A call to a manufacturer in Sri Lanka, if you are a Vonage user, could cost as much as $.18 per minute. This does not sound too bad, and really isn't, when you see how high some rates can get. But compare that to VoIP phone services that are able to beat this rate by as much as $.075 cents per minute, and you can see how such savings could quickly add up. In this situation, a one-hour business conversation through Vonage would cost $10.80. A good VoIP provider will only charge about $6.27. While this may not seem like a huge difference consider that this is around 42% cheaper. Now, if you could reduce your phone bill by 42%, wouldn't you want to? It does not take long for the choice to become clear. You could pay $100 per month on international calls, or you could pay $58 per month, and save over $500 per year…on one bill. And if you rarely dial internationally, then you may never pay for phone service again. It just depends on whether you are calling others using the same provider or not. But make no mistake: whether you go the ultra-cheap route, or you pay the nominal fee most providers charge for full phone capabilities, you'll be getting off a lot easier than you did before. The Internet's greatest accomplishment is how it has shrunk our world and made it possible for people from different countries to come together and realize we are not as different as we may think. Many people can now say they have friends and/or business associates in other countries, and that cannot help but bring our world a little closer together. Why should international long distance get in the way of that? With VoIP phone service, it becomes more affordable than ever before to broaden your horizons, whether for personal or professional gain.
