Women are offered so many different treatments to help them look younger, Botox, peels, creams and even surgery. But they do not tackle the sharp end of aging that you see tucked away in nursing homes all over the world - muscle tissue wasting that leads to a loss of function and independence.

Unfortunately it is not just the wrinkling of the outer layer of skin that makes someone who is 60 or 70 years old look older that that of a 30 something year old. It is also dependent on what is happening to the stuffing on the inside - when muscles start to shrivel and shrink, bodies sag, wrinkles appear and posture droops.

This does not just affect how a person looks but how they function. Ever weakening muscles affect every single part of daily living, from feeding and dressing one's self to getting up out of a chair or up the stairs.

It would be good if women got the message when they were no later than 30 years old as this is when they start losing precious muscle tissue. Yet they do not place much value on strength. If you were to guess which physical attribute would be high on most women's wish lists you can be pretty sure strong muscles would not be right up there.

Right from a young age women are conditioned to worry about their hair, their skin, their boobs, their legs and backsides - but strength? Sorry, not really our department.

Creeping muscle loss is what puts people in nursing homes so if they wish to stay out of them they need to take care of the muscles and their strength. Women even more so as they have less muscle to begin with and get frailer and more helpless faster than men.
Women also live longer than men so it is even more likely that they will end up needing care if they lose their strength.

We all know of someone within our own family who gone down this road. We did not have so much information about it years ago and what caused it. It was believed it was simply the aging process but now we know different. It can not be blamed on the passing years but a lack of muscle building and maintaining activity through the adult years.

As our lives have become more sedentary and inactive this loss of function is happening at younger and younger ages. Yet it is so simple to keep yourself strong. Get yourself started on a strength training program and never stop. Low intensity endurance type activity that most women like to do will not stop muscle tissue loss and certainly not rebuild it.

Your proper program should contain exercises that work all the major muscle groups performed just 2-3 times each week. If some effort is put into it the results will come far sooner - more energy, weight loss, increased strength and your body will become smaller, tighter, slimmer and trimmer.
