Latest Breaking News - Health - Viewing: When You Say Weight Loss You Really Mean Fat Loss Don't You?

2009-10-26

Weight loss is one of the hottest topics as everyone seems to be trying to lose weight nowadays. With two thirds of the worlds population overweight so much focus and attention is placed on the idea of 'weight loss' and 'losing weight' that many people actually lose sight of the actual real goal of achieving a lean, strong and healthy body.

But what is the difference between weight loss and fat loss? People seem to use both terms interchangeably. But it is NOT a simple matter of 'losing weight' in fact, let's go ahead and banish that term 'weight loss' from our minds altogether. Why?

Because 'losing weight' is not what you should be concerned with as losing body weight on its own will not allow you to achieve that lean, strong and healthy body.

Instead, all of your focus must be placed on changing your body composition (your muscle/fat ratio). The reason for this is simple...

Your body is made up of various different 'types' of weight, all of which contribute differently to your overall appearance, body weight and general health. There are people who weigh quite heavy on the scales but who are in excellent health with lean and strong bodies. And there are very 'light' people who are in poor health with soft, flabby and out-of-shape bodies.

Weight loss verses fat loss - what is the difference? Let's define it further:

Weight loss - you would like to lower your body-weight, the sum weight of your bones, muscles, organs and tissues and body fat.
Fat loss - you would like to lower your body fat, the amount of fat your body carries.
Healthy goals are 10-15% body fat for men and 15-20% for women.

Fat loss is the one you most likely want if your goal is to achieve a lean, strong, energetic and healthy body. You would want to get rid of unhealthy body fat which would hinder your fitness goals.

To put it simply, the goal of your exercise program that must contain mostly strength training exercise is to burn off excess body fat while maintaining lean muscle mass. There are two primary reasons why you should focus on this. First of all... the factor that determines your body's metabolic rate (the number of calories you burn at rest) is the amount of lean muscle tissue you have on your body. The more muscle tissue you have, the faster your fat burning metabolism operates.

Finally... those who simply 'crash diet' and attempt to drop large amounts of body weight over short periods of time are inevitably doomed to fail. Such an approach places the body into a 'survival at all costs' state and actually programs you to store more body fat in preparation to protect itself from starvation.

The way to avoid this negative situation is simple. Structure you 'weight loss' approach in such a way that you aim to gradually reduce your body fat levels while keeping your lean muscle tissue levels intact. The only way to do this is a proper eating plan that has you eating 4-6 small meals each day and your proper exercise program that maintains your strength and muscle tissue to burn off more fat.

This is the very best way to burn off body fat and more importantly keep it off permanently and allow you to achieve the kind of lean, slim and toned appearance that you strive for.
