We may wonder exactly what that word 'fitness' means. What do we get out of taking time out of our week to fit in a couple of sessions at the gym and will anyone really know if we don't? Physical strength and fitness is like fine tuning an engine. Our body is working at its best and we can perform to our potential. We also look and feel great. We have plenty of energy and can perform our daily tasks vigorously and alertly, with energy left over for enjoying leisure time activities. Being strong and fit generates feelings of mental and physical well-being. It also improves our body strength, stamina and endurance and creates energy reserves that are high and recovery from fatigue is fast. We hardly get a sniffle and we certainly do not get major killer 'lifestyle' diseases as our disease protection is in tip-top health. Good fitness also means we have the ability to endure, to bear up, to counter the stresses of daily living. We bounce back quickly from personal set backs and have good mental and emotional strength and fitness. Poor mental and emotional fitness means depression, anxiety and stress take their crippling toll and hinder a persons potential in life. A strong fit person is less likely to become overweight as they burn fat faster and more efficiently. To support a proper exercise program healthy eating is important and this in itself means a person will be so much healthier. They will also have the energy to be able to exercise with some effort and intensity. Poor food choices such as eating a diet of mainly processed foods drains energy and cannot properly support vigorous exercise. Our modern world has changed so much in the last 50 odd years. Now instead of a job that would involve physical work most working adults sit at a desk all day. Combine that with commuting to and from work and leisure time spent on the couch in front of the television many of us spend up to 80 percent of our day seated virtually motionless. The human body is designed to be active...very active. It cannot handle the stress of sitting for up to 16 hours of the day. Little by little the chemistry of the body changes and we lose function along with likely becoming overweight to some degree. As our body weakens without the necessary movement to stimulate it the immune system weakens as well. We then become sitting ducks for the epidemic of killer diseases that stalk and pick off the weakened and vulnerable. A program of proper strength training exercise is not 'optional' or some frivolous luxury it is an essential part of the self care we each need to practice so we can survive in our modern inactive and sedentary world. It does seem strange that we have taken out everything that even resembles physical 'work' to make our lives 'easy' and 'convenient' only to have to put back intentional exercise so we do not have a shortened life. If you are not already, get yourself started on your strength training program so you too can enjoy the multitude of benefits that being strong and fit will not only give short-term but long-term as well.
