People are always talking about saving money or investing wisely during our working years to ensure financial security when it comes time to retire. But how often do you hear about treating your strength and health as an investment? After all it does not make sense to have money if you lose your strength, health and independence. In our modern inactive world one seems to be regarded highly (money) and the other (strength) as way down on the list of priorities. Yet it is because of lack of strength that we become weak and frail, it is because of lack of strength that we fall and break a hip, it is because of lack of strength we become disabled and get put into a wheelchair and it is because of lack of strength we get farmed out to a nursing home because we cannot take care of ourselves. But what if you started treating your strength and health as an investment and the starting and continuing of a proper exercise program to protect your strength as a retirement strategy worth its weight in gold? The human body does not wear out, it rusts out. We are not designed for an inactive and sedentary life. But you say "I get plenty of exercise, I keep myself busy". But rushing around being 'busy' is not a proper exercise program and it can never ever replace it. If you are one of the 60-85 percent of people who do not do enough muscle building and maintaining activity to keep your strength you need to have a rethink. How would you rather spend the last third of your years - enjoying an active full life with strength and fitness or in nursing home having to have someone else feed and dress you? Retirement, like life, is so much more than about money in the bank. Proper exercise that will protect your strength and ultimately your health is way more valuable. Every single workout you do is like a deposit into an exercise account. This will accumulate and become one of the best investments you can ever make for yourself. Of course the very best time to start investing in yourself is when you are young and the second best time is to get yourself started right now. Just think how this will work to reduce medical costs, minimize the need for long term nursing care and eliminate the future burden on family, friends and society when you can take care of yourself for the length on your lifespan as it should be. Physical strength and fitness may be the ultimate investment opportunity and you only need to be willing to make the commitment (investment) of 2-3 sessions each week to reclaim and keep your strength, feel and look healthier, have an abundance of energy, be more self-confident and more productive and live a higher quality of life. A strong active life represents a gilt edged investment in life energy and vitality and will pay off many times over as you get older. Not only will you get an extended life but you will have a much higher quality of life. Proper strength training exercise is a blue chip investment; include it in your personal lifestyle portfolio.
