A web or website directory is simply a categorized website which contains listings to businesses and/or websites. The listings can be as simple as a bunch of titles and links (usually called a link directory) through to true web directories which have complex category structures and usually display listings with a title, links, keywords and long descriptions. A web directory is not a search engine, as some people believe, however good directories will contain great internal keyword search facilities. Website directories are usually branded as general directories or specialized (niche) directories and will offer either free or paid submissions. So which type of web directory is the best for your business or website? The answer to which web directory is 'the best' will depend upon your website's content, your preferred type of website visitor (demographics, targeted by market, geographically targeted etc.) and the overall cost versus results or sales. General free directories are used by all types of websites but mainly as an inbound linking tool to allegedly help the site's search engine ranking. Thousands of quality visitors and eager buyers are not going to visit a website from these types of directories. Free specialized web directories are somewhat better quality but again are used by thousands of webmasters just to get extra inbound links to their sites. Paid (or paid-to-list) general directories are more professional and will usually send many good quality visitors to their listed websites. Most of these directories offer long-term or lifetime listings for a small fee and are considered, in top webmaster circles, to be good overall value. Paid specialized directories cover a particular niche which can be anything from regional listings to a specific subject (cooking, games, web design etc.). They are usually very costly but the visitors to a site are of a very high quality. So the question still remains. Which type of web directory is the best overall? Free directories are often classed as 'link farms' by search engines and too many of your website's links on these directories can often harm your site's search engine ranking rather than help it. Websites listed on free directories also seem unprofessional. One must ask the question - if the company or website can't afford to buy directory links what is the true value of their product or service? Additionally, many 'free' directories are only free with a reciprocal link back to the directory. Niche, paid-to-list directories are definitely great quality but only if you can afford a listing. So that leaves the general paid-to-list directories. These are definitely the ones to consider for professional website links as unlike the costly niche directories, general directories such as Jucko deliver top quality, targeted visitors to listed websites without the big monetary outlay. Listings on Jucko include a lifetime link with title, short description, long description, meta keywords and direct linking from a tiny $1.00. Upgraded listings are also available for websites to improve their listing position on the directory.
