Latest Breaking News - Health - Viewing: We Need Our Friends Our Muscles More Than We Realize

2010-06-27

We have two types of fat on our bodies, the first is stuff you can grab hold of, sits under your skin and makes your clothes tight. The other type of fat is the villain and even under or normal weight people can have it. It is buried deep in the abdominal area and wraps itself around vital organs such as the liver, heart tissues and pancreas hindering their functioning.

These two types of fat are metabolically distinct from each other and the one inside the abdomen is the bad one, being associated with heart disease and diabetes. The scary thing is you cannot see or measure this fat; it is only visible with a medical scanning device. It is caused by the body becoming resistant to the hormone insulin when excess sugar and carbohydrates are continually eaten.

The body cannot continue to process the high levels of sugar in the blood so shuts down the mechanism that shunts glucose (blood sugar) into the muscles to be burnt for energy.
This means high levels are left circulating in the body along with high insulin levels which end up in places they should not be doing damage to organs and tissues.

When our energy in/energy out system is working properly a balance of fat burning and fat storage occurs without one becoming overweight but once the system becomes disrupted and hormones become unbalanced fat storage is escalated. This is called metabolic syndrome and one of the symptoms is carrying excess weight around your mid-section.

Our modern day inactive and sedentary lifestyles are the cause of these problems. We can get through each day without having to exert ourselves in any physical way yet that is precisely what our bodies need to remain healthy. Muscle tissue needs to be used and used often and challenged so it stays strong.

If not enough muscle building and maintaining activity is done through vigorous 'work' or intentional exercise muscle cells become resistant to insulin. The muscles are where fuel (calories) are burnt for energy so when we spent 80 percent (or more) of our day sitting and hardly moving it no surprise that our bodies cannot burn the food we eat for energy as so little is required. Think of it like keeping your car idling when it should be out on the road going through its paces.

If muscle tissue is not used it is broken down by the ever efficient human body and when there is less of it the metabolism becomes even less efficient. As the chemistry of the body changes negatively, dangerous fat stores increase and insulin resistance worsens.

But it does not have to be like this. A proper exercise program made up of mostly strength training exercise is what is needed to get and keep those muscles strong and healthy so they can burn up excess sugar from the blood. The more toned and strong the muscles become the better able they are to get and keep you slim, trim and healthy.

Just 2-3 sessions each week is needed to reverse your disease risk. To make sure you do the exercises correctly and with enough intensity seek the help of a fitness professional at your local gym or fitness center. If you waste time and effort on inefficient activity you will not get the results you need and your health will become more at risk.

So get yourself started and the fat both inside your body along with the stuff widening your waistline will be slowly but surely burnt up by your friends - your muscles.
