Up until recently a loss of strength and feebleness was considered just an inevitable part of the aging process. Nothing we could do about it. But now we know what really causes it and it cannot all be blamed on the number of candles on one's birthday cake. The culprit is one's lifestyle for years or even decades before one gets 'old'. Although it is not something we like to hear about, the problems we face as we get older are a consequence of disuse, of not doing enough muscle and strength building and maintaining activity. The old 'use it or lose it' scenario. Without the physical activity that keeps the human body strong, hormones become deficient and if vital nutrient intake from high quality food is below par it is all compounded by the aging process. The single greatest threat to an aging adult's ability to stay well, healthy and fully functional is the slow and steady loss of muscle tissue and bone mass. This loss drags down health and the ability to function properly but is not the result of the passing of the years. Most of us get through each and every day without having to move a muscle, so, how can we expect to keep our strength if we don't use it? The human body is build to work and be strong and active. It had to be strong to survive the harsh conditions that our ancient ancestors had to endure. Our modern world has cut out the primary way our body renews itself as the hormones needed for 'growth and repair' are only stimulated when our body is challenged with physical activity. But the good news is we each have a choice, we can choose to keep our strength through proper exercise which stimulates the process of growth that spreads throughout every cell and tissue in our body. This will keep us functionally younger, and not just a little bit younger - a whole lot younger in every way. The brakes have to be put on to stop the loss of around one half pound of muscle tissue each year after age 30 with this loss doubling after age 50 years. A proper program of strength training exercise is needed as this is the only hope of preventing the cascade of health problems that follow a critical loss of strength. Get yourself started right away at your local gym or fitness center. Do not think that 'cardio' type activity is enough exercise, as it is not. Long, slow recreational activities like walking or cycling or other endurance activities do not work the muscles through their ranges of movement to challenge them. These types of activities will not even stop muscle tissue loss and certainly not rebuild it. Not using the human body tells it to decay into a frail, weak shell and a steady tickle of chemicals whisper to the cells to deteriorate and degenerate. But when you keep your body strong with proper strength training exercise your muscles release specific hormones that instruct the cells to grow, renew and repair. You can choose whether your cells are being replaced with younger, stronger and healthier ones or whether you let them decay. They don't really care, and just obey the signals you send. Simple really, exercise and stay strong, slow down, sit down and waste away. Which option do you choose?
