Modern medicine is facing the need for a deep shift in its thinking. Decades of treating disease symptoms rather than promoting wellness is creating an urgent need for all of us to take greater responsibility for one's own heath and wellbeing. We need to shift from a sickness/treatment model to a wellness/preventative mindset. There is scientific evidence that our epidemic health problems are mainly caused by our increasingly inactive and sedentary lifestyles, nutritional deficiencies from our heavily processed food supply and toxins in our environment. Close to half the population in the US suffers from at least one chronic disease and many more suffer from multiple conditions yet we continue to devote far more resources to treating sickness than we do to staying well. We have 'sickness treatment' systems in place not 'health care'. Our children are fatter and unhealthier than any in history and as a consequence will have a 20-30 year lessened life span. Our society subsidizes the production of unhealthy foods, we train doctors who prescribe drugs instead of encouraging wellness, we build roads and highways instead of walking and bike trails, we tolerate insurance policies that favor drugs and surgery over prevention and we peddle junk foods instead of healthy foods. We tolerate all of this and are turning a blind eye to the horrible reality of the consequences. Even if you are not presently suffering from a disease it does not mean it is not developing unseen inside of you. Chronic 'lifestyle' diseases such as the 'big three' heart disease, cancer and diabetes and at least 50 others can take years (even decades) to manifest themselves. But when the symptoms start to show and the human body has reached this broken down state there is no doctor, no drug, no surgery or treatment that can restore true health again. At best, symptoms can be managed leaving the victim with a much lowered quality of life, for the rest of their life. Wellness is different from health and simply not being sick is does not mean you are healthy. Practicing wellness is based on giving the body what it needs to support optimal health and a high quality of life. We are starting to understand and appreciate the body's natural capabilities to support its own health and wellness rather than sitting back and waiting for the onset of disease and then treating the symptoms. But is does mean being proactive and doing things like proper exercise that works the muscular system and eliminating processed foods as much as possible. Just these two things done regularly will go a very long way to keeping each of us healthy. Strength training exercise that works our muscles through their ranges of movement stimulates 'growth and repair' hormones that rebuild, renew, repair and replace old worn out cells and tissues. That is why proper exercise is so important if we wish to remain healthy. Combine your exercise with as much natural whole food as possible and you will have a simple recipe to keep yourself healthy and assist your body to fight off disease and not let it take hold. The time spent exercising and preparing your food is the best investment you can make in yourself and will make a huge difference in whether you remain healthy and well or your body shifts towards accelerated aging and disease. We each have a choice, make it the right one.
