Latest Breaking News - Health - Viewing: Want Some Youth Enhancing Hormones?

2010-03-14

Most of us have heard about our hormones and have a basic understanding that they are the chemical messengers that give instructions to our cells, tissues and organs. What you may not know is that they also hold the key to successful aging and can keep us healthy and well or point us to disease and dysfunction.

We know now that hormonal decline is a central feature of the degenerative process that we know as aging and is responsible for all of the negative aspects of aging such as loss of strength, energy and vigor and a change in our body composition (muscle/fat ratio). Research also tells us that unfavorable shifts in hormonal levels trigger many diseases that hospitalize and kill millions of people around the world each year.

Now-a-days hormone replacement therapy is big business as it promises physique transformation, weight loss, super health and lifetime youthfulness. These are things our youth orientated society love and want desperately but you need a deep wallet to be able to spend many thousands of dollars on keeping your youth with hormone therapy.

There is an easy way to stimulate these hormones that can keep us not only well and healthy but full of energy and vitality. It is called proper exercise. Not going for a walk or doing a bit of gardening exercise which is just part of living an active lifestyle. The exercise needed to stimulate 'growth and repair' hormones that will keep you youthful is strength training exercise.

The hormones that can help us stay young, keep our weight down, and protect us from disease are only stimulated when the muscular system of the body is challenged with activity. The key word here is 'challenged'. Low intensity recreational activities like walking, jogging, cycling or swimming do not work the muscles through their ranges of movement under a load so do not qualify as proper exercise.

For decades people have been mislead that all they need to do is 'fun' things that they 'enjoy' to stay healthy and well. But we now know that these low to moderate intensity activities are not enough to combat the decline of vital hormones that keep us healthy right down at cellular level as we get older.

The time we spend on an exercise program needs to be more than simply burning calories while we are exercising. It must provide us with an increased metabolic rate (the rate our body processes food and burns fuel) long after the exercise session has finished. So it must be intense enough to boost our hormones to instruct our body to become stronger

This is where your proper exercise program comes in, working your muscles giving you the most 'bang for your buck' for the time you are prepared to spend exercising. The harder you work the less time you need to spend doing it. Combine that with high quality nutrition and you will be amazed at how your body will become stronger, leaner, healthier and more youthful no matter your age.
