You know you want to get into better shape, lose some weight and improve strength and fitness levels but each time you try you lose focus and drop out before these goals are reached. You understand about the long term benefits of exercise; disease risk reduction, longevity, weight loss, better mental and emotional health, stress relief and more energy. You say to yourself "How can I make it stick this time, how can I make it permanent in my life without a struggle?" If you are not currently achieving the kind of fitness or weight loss results you know you want, you can be sure that faulty motivation is at the root of your problem. Countless research studies have made it crystal clear that the single most important factor in fitness success is your own level of motivation. Of course, what you eat and when and how you exercise are also central components of your success or lack of it. Developing a do-able exercise program and eating plan is absolutely essential. But without the proper motivation that gets you going you just will not do what you should be doing for success. And as we all discover sooner or later, knowledge without action produces well...nothing. So, just what is this motivation thing? Is it a feeling or a thought that gets us moving and to the gym? The trouble is many of us think it is something that will just come to us if we wait long enough... that one day we will wake up and suddenly be propelled out the door on a quest to get ourselves strong, fit and lose some weight. Rather than wait around for this to happen which is nothing more than a myth we would all be happier if we quickly came to the realization that motivation is something we generate for ourselves, not something we wait around for. Motivation comes from doing, and the more you do it the better you get at it. Motivation like anything in life needs work and effort. You will always need to be calling on it as what inspires us and motivates us varies from day to day and week to week. What got us cranked up and going today may not work tomorrow. You will always have two choices and will be forever at that fork in the road. Will you allow yourself to become overweight, weak and unfit or will you choose a life where you protect your health and fitness and enjoy a much higher quality of life? Only you can look deep inside yourself and find that one thing that will keep you moving. It could be an idea, a desire, an emotion or a goal that will keep you moving forwards and prevent you from backsliding. This is something you had better get used to if you choose a life of fitness, strength, good physical, mental and emotional well-being and a healthy body weight. But you will never regret it - just ask anyone who is doing it and see what they say.
