We have been lead to believe for decades that cardio activity such as walking, jogging or cycling is necessary for weight loss. "You jog to lose weight" is the common thinking. While this may work in some cases, research has shown that cardio exercise alone is not sufficient for weight loss as you burn a relatively small amount of calories per session. And the worst of it is that once you finish your exercise session calorie burning comes to a halt. So, for a 30 minute jogging session you may burn around 200-300 calories which is only the equivalent of a couple of slices of bread. It has now been proven that cardio exercise alone is not the most effective way to lose body fat or "lose weight". This may be not only because of the relatively small amounts of calories burned but also due to the potential loss of muscle mass which is your fat burning machinery. Cardio exercise, especially lots of it when combined with a reduced calorie diet increases your chances of burning your precious muscle tissue. This is a situation you want to avoid at all costs as a reduced metabolic rate from the loss of muscle tissue will not help you burn body fat. With less muscle tissue, you burn fewer calories. It is that simple. Today things have changed and there has been a major shift towards strength training exercise. Men and women of all ages use resistance machines and free weights as the importance of muscular strength is now being recognized. Strength training helps to counter the loss of muscle tissue that adults lose from the mid 20's onward throughout their lives. Your strength training program has many health benefits and apart from increasing strength will also strengthen bones preventing osteoporosis (which two in three women will develop and three out of four men). It will also boost your metabolism for greater calorie burning every minute of the night and day. So, stop laying the blame squarely at your slow metabolism or your body type for not being able to lose the weight you want. Try shifting your focus to what you can do to achieve weight loss success. The answer does not lie in a 30 minute cardio session or in severely reducing calories. Try the new way to weight loss which is building up your metabolic engine through strength training exercise to burn the fat off your body rather than trying to starve it off. You will also build better health along with a better body that allows you to eat more and stay lean permanently. Just substitute a couple of strength training sessions instead of the long slow cardio time and be amazed how you will break through weight loss plateaus and reap yourself a wealth of health benefits as well. Expect a highly toned body, enhanced strength and power, and improved lifestyle and sports performance.
