Who would have thought that when U.S. figure skater Vera Wang competed at the national championships and was featured in an issue of Sports Illustrated that same year she would ever end up making her biggest name in the fashion industry? But with her world-renowned wedding dress designs, she has done just that. Having crafted gowns for big names like Mariah Carey, Holly Hunter, Jennifer Lopez, and Sarah Michelle Gellar, Wang's name is synonymous with quality. And with more recent moves into the fragrance industry, she is poised to collect an equally worthy reputation. In the short time since she set out on her own in 1990, Vera Wang Perfume has grown in options for both men and women. The initial offering was for women in 2002, and while not as strong or appealing as the scents that have followed, set a solid starting point for the brand name. Preferred consumer choices for her relatively young line of fragrances consist of the following: Vera Wang for Men (2004) Following a lukewarm reception of the original feminine scent, the men's line of Vera Wang perfume has shown surprisingly well. Top notes include green mandarin leaf and Yuzu, a citrus fruit from eastern Asia. This part of the scent is sweet and reserved, a sensation that follows through to the middle notes of nutmeg, leather, and anise. The base is the most preferred and longest lasting of the scent, featuring a Sandalwood and tobacco mix that accounts for masculine overtones. Princess (2006) If a light and sweet fragrance is your preference, the Princess line from respected perfumer Harry Fremont makes a strong choice. Only four years old, this is one Vera Wang perfume with staying power both literally and metaphorically. It contains a dozen notes of floral sweetness, which include water lily, lady apple, mandarin meringue, apricot skin, and dark chocolate. Another unique touch is ripe pink guava, a myrtle plant native to Mexico, South and Central Americas. Rock Princess (2009) The latest scent from Vera takes a more traditional approach, but to equal effect. With top notes that consist of bergamot, white peach, and red raspberry, Rock Princess starts with a strong citrus punch before moving into a more floral arrangement. The heart notes consist of rose, jasmine, lily, and heliotrope, for a bright touch of springtime. The main part of the scent, however, waits in the base notes of cashmere woods, iris, and coconut, for a cool, refreshing, tropical finish. It remains to be seen when the next masculine scents will debut from Vera Wang Perfume. However, the female line has sustained growth and variety for its short, less-than-ten-years-old lifespan. With other brands consisting of Truly Pink, Bouquet, Look, Sheer Veil, and Flower Princess, Vera Wang will continue its experimentation as it increasingly adds fans of its product. Has it risen to the top of a climate controlled by the likes of Hugo Boss, Ralph Lauren, and Dolce & Gabbana? Not quite. But with its youth and quickly growing experience, it is safe to say that Vera Wang will command even more respect in the years ahead.
