Latest Breaking News - Relationships - Viewing: UK Condom Adverts Outrage Monday, April 13, 2009 It is all over the news. The UK has the highest teenage pregnancy rate in the entire Europe. In fact, the problem is so severe that several proposals have been drafted to allow the airing of adverts for condoms on public television. There appear to be mixed feelings about these proposals. Opinions have broken into two camps. Anti condom adverts. First, there are those who oppose strongly to the proposals, especially from people with strong religious faith. Their belief is that condom adverts should be tasteful. However, nothing in the proposals appear to point towards having tasteful ads. The ads will more likely reflect the current lifestyles of the teens in the UK. When aired on TV, they will appear to be encouraging such lifestyles, which is clearly against the values of those with strong religious faith. Then there are those who worry about the truthfulness of the adverts. Ads are, after all, commercial messages that are driven by profit. Will the ads ever be unbiased and truthful? But even under such strong criticism, there are those that think that using condoms seem to be the right thing to do. Pro condom adverts. The whole argument seems to be centered around the teenage lifestyle. Very little is mentioned about the products itself (i.e. the condoms) in the news articles. The future depends on how different arguments are being presented. Many are worried about the adverts becoming encouragement for certain undesirable lifestyles. But the fact is, teenage pregnancy has been on the rise and the majority of the teens have opted for abortion. This means that the pregnancies are unwanted in the first place. Therefore, they should be prevented from happening. Those in the pro adverts camp don't believe that the problem is caused by a lack of information. It is, however, caused by a change in lifestyles. Therefore, the adverts should reveal truthful information about the current lifestyles that teens are adopting. They should be made aware the consequences of practicing casual sex. The ads should present facts in a clear and unbiased manner. The ultimate decision to engage in whatever behavior, is of course, completely up to each teenage individual. Those who support relaxing the rules for condom adverts don't necessarily support profit driven ads. Instead, they do support the notion of raising awareness about the issues at hand. In other words, the ads should stem from concern rather than pure profits. Those in the education field commented that the young in the UK don't feel purposeful enough in their lives to choose not to get pregnant. If the teens feel that there are real opportunities out there for them to have a better life, they will naturally opt to avoid the inevitable of unwanted pregnancies when they engage in casual sex. Whether pro or anti condom adverts, almost everyone seems to be agreeing to the fact that relevant rules need to be enforced. This is to prevent ads from being manipulative and biased. It appears that as long as the ads act as a solution to the problem (as opposed to aggravating the problem), everyone is consenting.
