2011-01-23

While teenagers have been dreaming about the prom all their lives, parents on the other hand have been dreading it. This does not mean though that parents are not excited about their children going to the prom, but it is the financial implication of the prom that has somehow made parents dreadful about this special night.

It cannot be denied that the prom entails a lot of expenses. The biggest chunk of the budget will probably be that of the prom dress. Moreover, there is still the footwear to think about. In addition, there are other preparations as well like the hair and makeup. Indeed, spending for the prom is not that easy. Although prom dresses need not really be expensive, most young girls think that the most beautiful dresses are those that are the most expensive.

While you should not really be too hard on your children, there are some tricks that could actually keep your teenager away from extravagant prom.

First and foremost, you can help them pick out their prom dress. Since most parents know where to find the most affordable things, finding beautiful yet affordable prom dresses wouldn't be a problem at all. You can scout around for prom gowns yourself and lead your teenagers to these shops when they are trying to find their gowns already. There are certainly a lot of shops which offer beautiful gowns at lower costs that most stores. In fact, you can even go to a vintage shop or a surplus store for prom dresses.

Second, you can encourage your teenager to scout for a prom dress in advance. While this may appear very noble, this is actually one way of keeping your teenager from extravagant prom since clothes that are not in season can be bought at discounted prices. Thus, in a similar manner than winter clothes are cheaper in the summer, prom dresses are also cheaper if you buy them off season.

Third, you should arrange for your teenager to go to the prom with friends. If they o to the prom as a group, you can easily book a limo rental or a prom bus for them which would turn out a lot cheaper than renting out a whole limo for just one or two persons. If they go as a group, they can share with the limo or prom bus rental. Moreover, they will also have a good time since they can start the party even at the limo since the mood is already lifted with their presence, and they get to hang out as a group as well.

Finally, you should book an appointment with the hairstylist and make-up artist earlier as well. Early bookings most likely will get you discounts. Aside from the fact that this is one way of avoiding the rush, most bookings that are done during the day of the prom will turn out more costly than early bookings.

So, who says that proms should be expensive? If you know the right tricks, your teenager can have all the fun that they can have without really spending so much.
