2011-01-20

The feeling of sadness could be just a passing emotion but when we talk about depression that is definitely something else, something more serious that could lead to more severe conditions and worse, even death.

Records at the Mental Health Council of Australia showed that over 100,000 Australian youths and over a million adults suffer from depression every year and a ratio of one in five Australians gets depressed at one point in their lives.

Depression has become a growing concern in the society and studies and researches have been conducted to find a potential treatment to this rising menace.

One medical student from the University of Technology Sydney named Kirk Wilson conducted a research on the possibilities of treating depression with traditional Chinese medicine, acupuncture in particular, as against the drug-based treatments such as chemical anti-depressants.

Acupuncture is an ancient form of traditional Chinese medicine that involves specialized needles used to stimulate the acupuncture points located in the various areas in the body. These acupuncture points are directly connected to the vital organs of the body's system. Stimulating these points does not only treat a specific ailment but rejuvenates the entire wellbeing as a whole.

Wilson's research involved two groups of patients wherein the first group was treated with chemical based anti-depressants and the second group was treated with both anti-depressants and acupuncture.

The results of the experiment showed an encouraging outcome.

Wilson said the second group, who received both drugs and acupuncture treatments showed a significant level of reduction in the depression levels, which is an indication that drug-based treatments with acupuncture support have better positive effects to patients, especially to those who may not respond to chemical-based anti-depressants alone.

Wilson said he has always been intrigued with the mind and body relationship and this research on acupuncture and depression is a culmination of his intellectual passion.

His passion grew stronger with the thought of replicating his clinical expertise as an acupuncture practitioner with an actual support of research results.

He added that based on clinical experience he was definitely sure that acupuncture and traditional Chinese medicine can treat people with anxiety or depression problems however, he was not sure of the extent of the improvements of his patients.

With research, he soon found out that by looking at the statistics, he was amazed with the major difference or significance of the alternative treatments as against the traditional drug-based anti-depressants.

Wilson said he was quite overwhelmed with his findings, however, sends out a caution that researching a passion can have its own side effects such as taking for granted important personal matters such as family.

However, despite the trials, Wilson said he kept on going albeit slowly, to be able to achieve the much greater importance of the result of his research and most importantly to get the message across to other health practitioners about acupuncture and its role in treating mental health problems.
