With a current weight-gain epidemic in our modern inactive world it is little wonder so many people would like to lose weight so they can look and feel better about themselves. One word that you hear about that is used frequently in relation to weight gain or weight loss is metabolism as it often gets the blame as it is the rate your body burns fuel. When you hear from someone say "My metabolism has slowed down" they are probably right. Anyone over the age of 25 years in this inactive and sedentary world that does not do a proper structured exercise program is most certainly going to have a slowed metabolism. Your metabolism after all is essentially your body's engine. Round the clock whether you are active or sleeping it is burning fuel (calories). It governs how much of your intake of food is burnt for energy or stored on your body in the form of excess body fat. If you have allowed your muscular system to become flabby and un-toned you are going to be burning a lot less fuel than someone who is strong and fit. So, your problem of being overweight comes down to having too much fat for the amount of muscle tissue you possess. This is your body composition (muscle/fat ratio) and it not caused solely by eating too much food but really is about not doing enough muscle building and maintaining activity. This is very easy in our modern world as everything that resembles 'work' for our muscles has been removed to make our lives 'easy' and 'comfortable'. The price we are paying for this situation is that two thirds of our population has become overweight to one degree or another. The only solution that will correct this is to restore lost muscle tissue that is responsible for the slowed metabolic rate and the only type of exercise that will do this is strength training exercise. Just a pound or two of renewed muscle tissue will boost your metabolic rate and start to chew into that excess body fat. You will not even notice this as it is buried deep under the fat and that is your real enemy not the healthy strong muscle tissue that will help you become slim again. As you re-tone and restore your fat burning muscle tissue your weight on the bathroom scales may not change but be assured that underneath the fat right down at base level important changes are happening to your metabolic motor that will help you become leaner and slimmer. Of course it is not an instant 'fix', there are none of those when it comes to fat loss. But you are working on a long-term solution and slowly but surely you can reclaim your strong, lean, slim healthy body by revving up and rebooting your metabolic rate. This will mean you will be burning more fuel every minute of the day and night burning off that fat that spoils your looks and increases your disease risk.
