Latest Breaking News - Health - Viewing: To Keep Our Strength We Need To Replace Missing Movement From Our Lives

2010-10-25

For the beginning of our species, human beings have always had to physically exert themselves in the name of survival. Even with agricultural developments, advancements in transportation and the domestication of animal's daily physical activity was still the norm even after the Industrial Revolution.

Then came the 20th Century where everything changed forever - automation rapidly replaced the physical demands of daily life. Within a couple of hundred years most people in developed nations no longer had to perform anything that even vaguely resembled physical work or exertion.

This gives us all an 'easy' and 'convenient' life and most of us sit for up to 80 percent of our day doing activities that require no exertion at all. The problem with this is our bodies have not changed and are the same as our nomadic ancestors that thrived on physical activity. They have been designed for vigorous physical activity and plenty of it.

They require the stimulation of this movement that tells the body's cells to renew themselves each day. Signals are sent to the brain from the muscular system and without a constant challenge to the muscles instead of renewal chemicals whisper to the cells and tissues - decay - degenerate - die.

The end result is wasting of 20, 30 or more pounds of muscle tissue that leads to physical and mental decline over a period of time. This slowly but surely robs a person of the ability to perform the required physical tasks and needs of daily living.

Much sooner that you should, you lose the ability to stand up from a chair, to climb stairs, to carry things and robs you of the joy of living an active lifestyle. The loss of muscle has a profound affect on the human body; it slows down our metabolism (the body's engine), saps our strength and energy, weakens our bones and joints and makes it harder for us to manage our weight. A weakening faltering immune system also puts us at risk for diseases like heart disease, cancer and diabetes.

Losing this muscle tissue makes our years show and be felt more than any other factor and is the most important cause of the decline we experience as we grow older. If instead you replace the missing physical work in our lives with a proper strength training program to retain your muscle mass and strength you can substantially slow or even reverse the decline. As many as 10-20 years of lost strength can be reversed after engaging in proper strength training for just a few months.

To take care of your own strength and therefore the quality of your life through proper exercise and nutrition is the ultimate responsibility one can have for ones own health.

Do not allow a sedentary and inactive lifestyle to erode the health and mobility that you wish to keep and enjoy. You need that for your entire lifespan, so take it upon yourself to stay strong throughout your adult years to protect your future.
