Latest Breaking News - Home Improvement - Viewing: Tips on Buying Washing Machines

2008-10-28

There are several types of washing machines for your consideration. Price of the washing machine depends on production materials, special features, and size of the machine. In order to make the best buying decision, you will have to be clear about your own needs and wants.

For instance, are you expecting heavy loads every time you do a wash? Big families usually require a bigger washing machine. If durability is a concern, perhaps you may want to consider buying a machine with a stainless steel tub. Stainless steel tubs last longer compared to tubs made from other materials such as high grade plastic or porcelain-coated steel.

Features of washing machines often come in the different types of cycles available. The type of cycle used is dependent on how heavy the load is and the type of clothes being washed. For instance, common wash cycles usually include light wash cycle, regular wash cycle and heavy wash cycle. Obviously, the heavy cycle is meant for heavier loads. More detergent, water and time is needed for the cycle to complete. Higher end models may include special types of cycles such as delicate cycle or extra soak cycle. These are meant for special fabric.

But perhaps the most important element to consider is whether to buy a front load or a top load washing machine. At first glance, a top load washing machine costs a lot less than a front load washing machine. However, a top load machine uses more water and energy to complete a washing cycle. Also, because it uses more water, the dryer also has to use more energy to dry the clothes.

On the other hand, a front load washer uses a lot less water compared to the top load washer. A lot less can mean anything from 50 to 60 percent less water. A front load washer also spins faster. For these reasons, clothes that are washed using a front load washer dry faster. The only downside is that front load washers are generally more expensive. So you will have to weigh the long term cost savings to see if a front load washer makes more sense in the long run. Mostly, if you have heavier loads to wash, or if you have more frequent washes, you will see remarkable differences.

When buying washing machines, it is best to take a walk around home appliances retail stores to have a first hand experience of what is being offered in the market. The main goal here is to get a better feel of the prices around. You can also do the same on the Internet by visiting washing machine price comparison sites or review sites.

However, a visit to a brick and mortar retail store will allow you to see for yourself whether a washing machine is easy to operate or not. There is little point in investing in a sophisticated washer that needs an astronaut to operate!

Finally, when buying a washing machine, remember to ask about the warranty period and the scope of coverage. If need be, you may also choose to buy extended warranties, although this is not mandatory.
