First things first - varnish can be removed by using a special varnish remover that softens the surface or -a more difficult option - by being sanded away. Either options you choose, to make sure you will get the optimal result in removing varnish, simply take into account the following steps:

- Varnish always requires to be removed prior to applying a new coat. This way you will be sure you will have a smooth surface.
- Most likely, you will not find varnish removers - these are usually called "paint removers" or "paint strippers" and will work both for varnishes and paints.

- Paint removers are available in paste or liquid forms. These can be sprayed on or brushed on. Liquids are usually intended for removing one or two coats of paint, while brushable paint removers can be applied for multiple layers, on vertical or horizontal areas. If your brush cannot get into small grooves, use a piece of wood to remove old paint from those spots.

- Paint removers also come in the form of sprayers, being thick enough to cling but liquid enough to be sprayed on easily.
- If you are environmentally-aware or feel uneasy around strong chemicals, make sure you get environmentally safe paint removers - they do not work quite as well, but they do not have unpleasant side effects.

- While using the paint or varnish remover, combine it with a good quality brush that makes it easy for you to spread the solution evenly across the wooden surface. Try not to brush two times across the same surface and only brush in one direction! If the layer of paint or varnish is thick, applying a second layer of remover is recommended.

- Quickly remove varnish by using a burlap slack on rounded or uneven surfaces

- Varnish or paint can also be removed from the wood's surface by using a scraper. But be careful which one you choose - one of the most recommended types of scraper is the pull scraper that makes it highly unlikely to scratch the wood by accident.

- Always check the label of the product. If there's anything that's most important than anything, this is checking the label for instructions on how to apply paint removers, how long to leave it on and how to remove it.

- Protect your skin from the chemicals! Some paint removers can be quite pungent so make sure you wear gloves to protect your hands effectively.

- After cleaning the surface from the paint removers, some very rough surfaces will need to be lightly sanded. If you are using a quality paint remover, this action will not be necessary.
- After using paint remover, wash the surface thoroughly and spray each piece with a clear lacquer
