Haven't times changed? Can you imagine our grandparents or even our parents going to the gym and exercising their muscles? Back then everyone was far more active doing a variety of tasks and activities each day as part of their normal day to day living. Now we have push button appliances for all of these same chores. We hardly have to exert ourselves at all during the course of a day. Unfortunately this ease and convenience of our modern lives has a downside. Without this activity and movement in our lives the body does not receive the necessary stimulus to trigger the chemicals that renew, replace and rebuild all cells and tissues that keep the human body healthy. Theses chemicals (hormones) are stimulated when the muscular system is challenged to stay strong with physical activity. Without the stimulus for muscle growth and repair a slow process of muscle wasting begins. The muscles and the bones they are attached to become weaker, the metabolic rate slows allowing excess body fat to accumulate changing body shape and appearance, energy levels drop, joints deteriorate without strong muscles to hold them firmly in place and disease risk increases. Degenerative processes and conditions that cause accelerated aging are hastened. To counter and put the brakes on accelerated and premature aging an exercise program that contains strength training exercise that works the muscles is needed. After we reach our mid 20's we have two options available to us. We can chose not to exercise and become weaker and frailer or we can chose to have a proper exercise program in place and maintain our strength right throughout our adult life. Our bodies are simply not programmed for the reduction of vigorous physical activity that is now commonplace in our modern day lives. It is not a question of liking to exercise or thinking of it as an 'optional' extra', it is essential to stay alive and well. Our immune system is also kept strong when our muscles are strong and once it weakens we are very exposed to killer diseases. No one can say they are not aware of the importance of keeping their strength maintained yet statistics tell us that only six out of ten adults have a proper exercise program in place. Is this dangerous or what? It would not be very nice to get a dreadful diagnosis and realize that what you have done and haven't done over the years and decades actually caused this disease to happen. That is why we have so many 'chronic lifestyle' diseases; they are caused by our lifestyle. Heart disease, cancer and diabetes and dozens of others are all self-inflicted when we don't do what need to do to protect ourselves. So, get yourself started on your program. Get some help from a fitness professional at your local gym or fitness center so you can start getting great results in the shortest time. You only need 2-3 sessions each week which will keep your muscles and your overall strength in good condition. Proper exercise is probably the single most effective way to protect health, slowing and even reversing many components of the aging process. You can be rejuvenated and grab back ten or more years of lost strength and fitness. Think it a gift for those that love you as not only the quality of your life can be improved but the quantity as well.
