Latest Breaking News - Shopping - Viewing: The Upside And Downside To Wood Caskets

2011-12-03

There are several advantages and disadvantages associated with wood caskets. Those will form the subject of our discussion here. It is worth noting, right from the outset, that for many years, wood was the only material used for making caskets. It is probably out of that fact that we ended up in a situation where, even today, many people can not think of burying their beloved in anything else, other than wooden caskets. As such, the said wooden caskets become an indispensable part of all traditional burials.

The upside to wood caskets

One of the major advantages associated with these wooden caskets is the cost advantage. Although there are parts of the world where the cost of wooden caskets has gone up significantly as a result of logging prohibitions, in most other parts of the world, these remain as the cheapest caskets. And that turns out to be an important consideration when you come to appreciate the fact that most of us don't make any provisions for our funerals. So when we eventually pass on, it becomes the work of our beloved to put together the little amounts of money that may be in their pockets, to accord us a burial. Seeing that the sums of money likely to be raised in this way are quite small, it becomes essential to go for a cheap (yet reasonably decent) casket: which is what the typical wood casket turns out to be. There are also many people who provide well for their burials, but whose relatives find it illogical to expend money on a very costly casket, which will only end up under the ground thereafter. These too are likely to find wooden caskets handy: given the fact that they are reasonably decent caskets, yet they are also not too costly. Their usage therefore can't be termed as extravagance, which is usually avoided in these sorts of circumstances.

Another advantage associated with these wooden caskets is in the fact that they tend to be quite attractive, from an aesthetic point of view. Now the burial may be a sad event, but that doesn't mean that aesthetics don't matter in it. People still want to see to it that they bury their beloved in decent-looking caskets, and wood caskets often fit that bill quite well.

Yet another advantage associated with these wooden caskets in the fact that, when well constructed, they tend to be quite strong. This is important, because when all is said and done, nobody wants to even imagine the embarrassment that would arise in the event of a casket falling apart in the middle of a funeral procession!
The downside to wood caskets

The only major advantage associated with wooden caskets has to do with the environment. Like most other wooden products, making the said wood caskets means decimating trees (which are then converted into the wood used in making the caskets). But for people who are truly keen on having wooden caskets, this is usually not too much of an issue, as the trees that are decimated to obtain the wood used in making the caskets can quite easily be replaced, by planting new ones.
