2011-07-01

Illnesses and diseases are some of the hard facts of life. While many people fear facing these harsh realities, these are actually something that everyone should be aware of. After all, the best way to be free of the uncertain is to know the truth about it.
Cancer is one of the most deadly diseases that have conquered many people. However, this is really not something to be afraid of. According to many health specialists, like any other diseases, when diagnosed and treated earlier, there is a greater chance of successful treatment. As such, it is advisable to be sensitive and vigilant of signs and symptoms of this catastrophic disease.

Among the many types of cancer, prostate cancer is one of the most common. As the term implies, prostate cancer is a malignant tumor that grows slowly and remains confined in the prostate gland for many years before symptoms surface. The tumor unfortunately produces little or no symptoms for many years at all. On the other hand, prostate cancers do not behave similarly. While there are those which show little or no symptoms, there are also those which manifest symptoms even a few months after the tumor formed. What is important is being vigilant to the symptoms that may be associated with prostate cancer.

The most obvious signs are actually urinary symptoms. Since the prostate is located below the bladder, any enlargement in the prostate pinches the urethra tighter and tighter which consequently affects its function. The primary urinary symptoms include frequency, urgency, nocturia, and hesitancy. Frequency means urinating much more often than normal. Urgency is having a sensation that you need to urinate immediately. Nocturia is feeling the need to get up to urinate a number of times during the night, while hesitancy is the difficulty of starting the urine stream. Other symptoms are blood in urine or semen, impotence, bone pain, and loss of bladder control. Although prostate cancer is not the only disease that can cause the prostate to swell, it is advisable to consult your doctor whenever you experience these symptoms.

Fortunately, there are a number of treatments for this type of cancer. There are four types of standard treatments used which include watchful waiting, surgery, radiation therapy, and hormone therapy. Watchful waiting is the close monitoring of the patient's condition without actually giving any treatment until further advised. On the other hand, surgery can be either pelvic lymphadenectomy, radical prostatectomy, perineal prostatetectomy. Radiation therapy is a treatment that uses high energy x-rays to kill cancer cells. Finally, hormone therapy is a treatment that removes hormones or stops cancer cells from growing.

Today, there are a number of other treatments which are still tested in clinical trials. These treatments include cryosurgery, chemotherapy, biologic therapy, and proton beam radiation therapy. Cryosurgery involves the use of an instrument that freeze and destroy prostate cancer cells, while chemotherapy uses drugs to stop the growth of cancer cells. On the other hand, biologic therapy uses the patient's own immune system to fight cancer. Finally, proton beam radiation is a high energy radiation that targets tumors with streams of protons.

It is very important to be vigilant of Prostate Cancer Symptoms in order to seek your doctors advice for cancer treatment, or maybe for an Enlarged Prostate Treatment only.
