There are still some major misconceptions about strength training exercise and the effects it can have on your body. Some fundamentals of this very old and basic form of exercise have been drowned in the mass of misinformation that exists. It seems everyone is looking for a quick fix or magic instant solution for their weight and health problems but the short answer to this is - there is none. For decades the general public has been advised that 'cardio' type activity is the key to losing fat weight. The common prescription for 'weight loss' is walking, running or other endurance type activities. But we now know that these types of exercise alone are not sufficient for consistent fat loss that leads to a strong, lean healthy body. They do not address the number one problem that leads to a slowed metabolism (the body's engine) which is the main contributor to ongoing weight gain - loss of muscle tissue. Body composition is the measure of how much body fat you have in relation to how much lean muscle tissue you have (your muscle/fat ratio). Obviously you want less body fat and more toned muscle but endurance type exercise will not contribute to rebuilding and re-toning muscle tissue. The most effective weight loss program is based mainly on strength training exercise as it is the best way to change body composition. This gets the body burning more fuel (calories) around the clock which is how you achieve long-term weight management along with good health. The key to a healthy metabolism is so much more than battling the bathroom scale it is about healthy toned muscle which is the basis of a healthy functioning metabolism. If your muscles have become weakened from a lack of strengthening exercise it will be hard to control your weight as you do not simply have the capacity to burn lots of fuel and the body will then store excess as body fat. As we get older we are also fighting against an age-induced back slide in body composition. At around age 25 the body starts breaking down muscle tissue - that is unless it is being used constantly. So even if you maintain the same weight on the scales your body composition is changing. It is necessary to strength train just to maintain that muscle tissue otherwise you will lose the calorie burning and metabolism boosting affects of that tissue. Many people think their metabolism is slowing down and this has become a favorite excuse for weight gain. "Its not my fault I am gaining weight, my metabolism has slowed down". Yet the reality is exactly the opposite. People are not getting fatter because their metabolisms have slowed down. Their metabolisms have slowed down because they are getting fatter. So if a healthy functioning metabolism is your goal whether for weight loss or simply good health and longevity your strength training program is your number one best friend as it will give you all this and much, much more.
