New technologies and new insights into the aging process have meant we can now stay more youthful for longer than our parents and especially our grandparents. We now have the information and are slowly but steadily heading towards the dream of keeping oneself youthful regardless of our actual age. We know now that is not the fact that we age, but how we age that matters.

Although genetics does play a role, we do have a lot of control over how the aging process affects us. Modern medical enhancements have allowed us to alter the aging process to a degree but not everyone wants to go down this path and nothing can modify the way you age better than a few lifestyle changes. Here is the number one way and the one that will have the most impact on the way you age.

1.) The right exercise program - Your program needs to be made up of mostly strength training exercise. This is the only activity that will offset the loss of muscle tissue that causes accelerated aging. Starting in the mid 20's each of us will lose one half pound of precious muscle tissue if we do not do enough muscle building and maintaining activity.

2.) Exercise harder not longer - Short burst of intense exercise such as performing your proper strength training program at the right level of intensity (degree of difficulty) are more effective than long low intensity sessions. This type of exercise program is unbeatable for keeping your body strong and youthful.

The reason why this type of exercise can counteract aging is that it forces your body out of its comfort zone pushing it to its physical limits. This stimulates 'youth' hormones to keep it going which slows the aging process. As we get older, we produce less of the 'youth' growth and repair hormones which lead to the inability of our body to rebuild and replace our cells and tissues, until we eventually break down and die.

Proper exercise performed at the correct level of intensity counteracts this by forcing our bodies to produce more renew and repair hormones than are produced naturally. This is the 'fountain of youth' formula that keeps our body from deteriorating as fast as it would without the magic of these natural chemicals.
The result is that, with continued proper exercise that works the muscular system of the human body, the aging process is slowed down and held off. Just 2-3 sessions each week putting a bit of effort into your exercise program is all it takes for these wonderful benefits that anyone has access to.

But as with anything else, you should build up to it, ideally under the guidance of a fitness professional so you can discover how to make your exercise program deliver you the very best results. Think of this as a good investment in your health given the proven evidence that regular strength training helps maintain a healthy weight, keeps your muscles and bones strong, reduces risk of disease and makes you feel a million bucks.
