Latest Breaking News - Health - Viewing: The Pain Killing Aspects Of Acupuncture

2010-08-11

More and more people these days resort to alternative Chinese treatments such as acupuncture to relieve them of their pain, but would you believe that there are people who simply do not respond to needle therapy?

Ji-sheng Han, a neuroscientist and one of China's known acupuncture experts, never goes for needle therapy but not because he does not believe in it but simply because it does not work for him.

It might sound ironic that an acupuncture expert like Han, who have done extensive researches and studies to unravel the science behind this ancient form of Chinese healing, could be one of the 10 to 15 percent of individuals for whom acupuncture fails.

At the 13th World Congress on Pain held in Montreal, Han told an audience that acupuncture does not work for him, which is quite astonishing because he completely believes in the therapy psychologically, but physiologically his body just won't respond to the treatment.

Han, who also sits as director of the Neuroscience Research Institute at the Peking University and the founder of the Chinese Association for the Study of Pain, said that acupuncture and pain medicine has been his life's journey.

He since took such path after he graduated from the Shanghai Medical Institute back in 1953, which was the time when acupuncture therapy started replacing anesthesia in surgical operations.

During the conference, Han said today Chinese patients undergo a 30-minute pre-surgery acupuncture session to improve the effect of "acupuncture analgesia" during surgery.

Acupuncture can block out a person's sensitivity to pain by activating the body's natural pain relievers. The brain can release morphine-like substances or opioids such as enkephalin and endomorphin.

Those whose system does not respond favorably to acupuncture tend to react by producing too much anti-opioids that counters the effect of the morphine-like substances, thus fails to suppress the pain.

Acupuncture follows the principle of balance of the Yin and Yang of the Chinese Philosophy. Acupuncture treatment have a holistic approach, it tends to rejuvenate the body's system by reinstating balance.

Han said one of the most perplexing factors of acupuncture is its inconsistency when treating chronic pain. The right methods of placing and manipulating the acupuncture needles play a vital role in reducing pain.

Acupuncture does not work in easing pain if the needles are merely inserted under the skin where acupuncture points are identified, however, if the needles are being manipulated and twisted manually, it can provide relief. The best pain suppression results can be achieved when the acupuncture needles are being electrically manipulated.

But Han said, one thing is for sure, acupuncture is definitely more effective compared to drug-based medications or chemical pain killers, and acupuncture has no harmful side effects as what drugs usually have.
