Do you know anyone who looks older than they really are? Or maybe you know someone who is 'not well' and lacks the 'get up and go' that should be abundant in all adults. How about friends (maybe you) who have hardly the energy to hardly make it through the day and haven't had a good night's sleep for years? It is easy to blame these sorts of complaints on the aging process and until recently it was believed that there was little that could be done to prevent the ravages of aging. Today we know better as research has confirmed the downward spiral is not inevitable so you can do a whole lot more than hope for a strong, fit healthy body as you get older. Each of us needs to make some choices but before we can do that we need to be clear about what we would like to achieve in the way of our health and fitness goals. There are basically only two choices to make: 1.) Would you like to remain strong and active... your mind as sharp as a tack... hardly ever experiencing a sniffle, much less a serious disease... with the ability and energy to travel or start a new career whatever your age? 2.) Or would you prefer to plan your days around doctor's appointments, be stuck in front of the television in between doctor's tests and running to the drug store, unable to fully engage in life and the things you love to do and the people you love to be with? Surely the answer is a no brainer. We would all want to keep as much of our youth, health, wellness and vigor as we can, well into our later years. We would all like to be around to meet our grandchildren and even be around long enough to get to know them. There is a very good chance you will live longer than your parents but what good is it to add years to your life, if there is no life in your years? Did you know that proper strengthening exercise is one of the most important methods of keeping your mind and body in peak condition, birthday after birthday? This exercise program should be made up of mostly strength training to hold on to your life-saving muscle mass and blast away age-related body fat. This program will successfully combat bone loss, increase your lung function and your heart capacity as well as slash your risk of a whole list of degenerative diseases. If you are new to exercise seek the help of a fitness professional at your local gym or fitness center so you can be shown how to do things correctly so you receive the maximum benefits as safely and as quickly as possible. The old "use it or lose it" saying really does hold water in regard to our body. As we get older the domino effects of muscle and bone loss and body fat increases become more powerful and threaten to damage our health and wellness. This is of course only if we let them. We have the power and the knowledge to hold off these negative effects as the year creep by. When you discover how you can slow down and manage your aging through strength training exercise you will kick yourself for not starting sooner.
