Solar energy is today seen as a viable and inevitable competitor to nuclear energy. By harnessing power from the sun and using it to generate electricity, solar energy proponents have pointed to it as a renewable resource that doesn't harm the environment as a reason to adopt it more widespread. But if you look at the history of solar energy you will be surprised to see that it was not always something that people accepted. In fact, many in the establishment still would rather steer away from solar energy in spite of all its undeniable benefits economically and to the environment as a whole. While it has picked up steam in recent years, the widespread change that it threatens to the existing infrastructure has been a bane for Presidents like Carter and Bush for years.

Solar Energy Under Carter

Did you know that one area where Carter tried to focus his efforts was that of solar energy? He wanted to use it more than nuclear power, and that led to widespread discontent with companies that were benefiting from it. Add to the mix that infrastructure costs for implementation of solar energy across the board would have cost hundreds of billions of dollars (in 1970's dollars), and it was only a matter of time before Carter would become a one-termer looked at by many as one who did more harm than good to the environment.

Solar Energy Under Bush

Did you know that George Bush, Sr., wanted to see more developments in the realm of solar energy as a main energy source? During his time, Bush tried to find ways of bringing affordable renewable energy to the masses. However, although this is a noble goal, it took more time than he expected and the economy suffered. Bush eventually got voted out of office after just one term.

As you can see, solar energy is looked at as something that was feared enough by the establishment at the time to affect campaign contributions and the tide of public opinion.

Meanwhile, global warming and climate change have become buzzwords that may not have existed in the popular lexicon had these Presidents been given more freedom to establish solar energy as a viable infrastructure replacement. Today solar is a necessity. The question is: how will the establishment, and the people, react to it?

The policy makers of the past have taken great effort in trying to implement solar energy technologies. However, the citizens were not quite ready to make the switch yet. When there is no early adoption, solar energy remains an expensive option. And this continues to prevent widespread adoption from happening.

Fortunately, as more and more people become aware of the state that our environment is in due to persistent marketing campaigns, they too start to look at alternative energies. The future looks bright for companies venturing into solar energies as this is a growing marketing. Past policy makers have paved the way for future generations. Perhaps it is time that we all take solar energy seriously.
