Latest Breaking News - Health - Viewing: The Greatest Public Health Threat In Our Modern Lives Is Our Sedentary Behavior

2010-05-16

We are often hear about the tragic statistics of killer diseases like heart disease, cancer and diabetes and wonder if we will be lucky enough to get through to a good old age without the misfortune of contracting one of them. "So far so good" we say when we get to 40 or 50ish.

But what is really the most threatening danger to health in our modern world, and what makes us so susceptible to these frightening diseases?

The most deadly public health threat of modern day life is our physical inactivity and the great ill health risk it poses. Over the last few decades we have engineered almost all of the physical activity from our lives and get through the day literally without having to move a muscle. We spend our day mostly sitting, in the car, at work, and again in the evening maintaining our addiction to television.

As many as 8 out of 10 people work sedentary jobs, engage in no intentional/structured exercise program and are generally inactive around the house. Many people think this is enough to keep healthy but sadly it is not. The statistics prove that as many as one out of every two adults have at least one chronic ailment and many have multiple conditions.

This sort of lifestyle carries a risk factor for premature and preventable disease of double that of those who are strong and active. When you think about it surely it is easier to simply do a proper exercise program 2-3 times each week rather than have to go through the suffering of a serious disease. How bad would it be to live your life around doctors, tests, drugs and surgical treatments?

These chronic 'lifestyle diseases; as they are called because you get them from how you live your life are not curable. At best some of the symptoms may be managed by modern medicine but once the human body has arrived at such a broken down state there is no doctor or medical procedure that can fix it.

The best thing to do is to practice preventative self care in the form of a strength training exercise program. This alone can keep you well and healthy if done regularly and with enough intensity (degree of effort). This will stimulate the 'growth and repair' hormones that will tell your cells and tissues to rebuild, repair, replace and renew and will keep you younger and healthier. Without these hormones that can only be stimulated by vigorous physical activity chemicals whisper to the cells to degenerate, decay and die.

The cost of not exercising can be far greater than a lifetime of a gym membership. Heart surgeries can cost as much as quarter of a million dollars, and one must often spend thousands of dollars on medication afterwards for the rest of their life.

If, due to lack of exercise, your functional mobility prematurely decreases to the point where you can not care for yourself, you may end up spending thousands each month for the last 5 to 15 years of your life wasting away in a nursing home.
Imagine having to have somebody else dress, feed, and bathe you, because you no longer possess the necessary level of functional ability to do so yourself?

Like the old saying goes, you must use it or will you most definitely lose it. If you can not move when your body fails you, you cannot do anything but lie there and wait to die. Not a nice prospect. If you value your life, proper strength building and maintaining exercise should be one of your highest priorities. Your strength is needed more as you get older so get started on your proper exercise program and never stop.
