A large segment of the world's population has given up worrying about their health in favor of the comforts, conveniences and indulgences of our modern lifestyles. It is easier to fall into the habits of poor eating and a sedentary lifestyle than to consciously live a healthy life with proper exercise and healthy eating not only to maintain a healthy weight but to keep stress at a manageable level. But there is a high price for this and if we ignore the needs of our body it can cause major physical, mental and emotional problems somewhere down the track. When we experience uncontrolled stress levels from our busy lives all parts of the body and mind can be effected. Here are some of the negative changes your body can suffer when you ignore your stress: • You can become overweight easily when your hormonal balance is affected by the stress hormone cortisol. High levels of this hormone can lead to cravings, binge eating and overeating. This in turn can negatively affect your weight along with your blood sugar and fat levels. • Your moods can fluctuate severely making you feel tired, anxious and even depressed. This is not a recipe for a happy life. • Your immune system can become compromised predisposing you to serious disease. • Your energy levels decline so it becomes difficult to want to be active which further shunts a person into a downward health spiral. You can choose to be strong, fit and healthy. It is a big ask expecting to stay healthy without bothering to spent a small amount of time each week on a proper exercise program. When you feel stressed and time is tight exercising is often the first thing to disappear. This is a mistake as exercise is powerful anti-stress medicine reducing stress and anxiety and some of the benefits are: • Less anxiety. Studies have found that exercise significantly reduces electrical activity in tense muscles which has a calming affect on the entire body. • Improved mood and enhanced relaxation by increasing the release of endorphins (natural chemicals) during an exercise session. • Enhanced motivation to improve your diet. When you exercise regularly you take better care of yourself and eat healthier. • Makes you feel better about yourself and your lot in life. When you exercise you improve your self-image and boost self-esteem. Research tells us that between 60-80 percent of disease states have close links to stress. Busy people also tend to cut corners not only cutting out exercise and healthy eating but skimping on sleep as well, the very things that can help with a busy stressful life. Do yourself a favor and allow yourself the time out for just 2-3 exercise sessions each week. It will repay you time and time again. You will truly wonder how you could have managed without it. It is really not a negotiable option if you wish to reach your full potential in all areas of your life.
