Strength training exercise has been proven to benefit all populations, from adolescents, to athletes to seniors. Women, in particular, see tremendous health benefits from strength training especially after the age of 35 when they are already on the slippery slope of declining muscle tissue and bone loss. To avoid the metabolic sluggishness that occurs as women become older strength training can help keep the metabolism (the body's engine) running smoothly. This is dependent on rebuilding and maintaining the tissue that drives the metabolic rate – muscle tissue. When muscle tissue is toned and firm it burns more fuel (calories) day and night which helps keep the expanding waistline on many older women under control Traditionally, women relied on cardio activity (walking, jogging or cycling) and a low calorie diet to change their physical appearance. We now know that diets have the opposite effect to what we want and slow the metabolism allowing the body to store more fat instead of burning it. Long, slow, low intensity activity and dieting makes change to ones body an impossible goal. Research shows that strength training is absolutely essential if we wish to create visual changes in our bodies, and it has been proven over and over that the benefits of strength training extend far beyond the visual. The benefits extend from better sleep; to feeling better about ones self to using it as a de stressing mechanism. Along with stronger muscles and bones strength training creates stronger ligaments and tendons which all serve to support joints and decrease the likelihood of injury from other activities. With the increase in bone density due to increased muscle strength the risk of the bone disease osteoporosis is reduced. Strength training exercise enhances our quality of life as it enables us to better perform our daily tasks and activities that require lifting, carrying, pushing and pulling. Becoming stronger also creates more energy which is often dwindling as women get older. This extra energy can be used for enjoying life's bounty beyond the normal daily chores. It is a shame that some women still believe that toning their muscles will create large muscles that are unattractive. They say things like "I'll strength train once I get this fat off" or 'I don't want to turn it into muscle". Well for starters women should be more afraid of losing their muscle tissue rather than worrying about something that can never happen. Women cannot build large muscles because they are genetically incapable of doing so. You also cannot turn fat into muscle or muscle into fat as each type of cell is unique from the other. So forget the misconceptions and focus on the fact that you can knock 10 -20 years of aging off your body with the right strength training program and if it is done correctly. To ensure this get your program set up and monitored properly by a fitness professional to ensure you receive the very best results. The importance of strength training for women should not be underestimated and can return or give you a youthfulness that you may never even had before in your life. Now that's something to look forward to isn't it?
