Most of us know that strength training exercise is a fantastic way of strengthening and toning the entire body but many people somehow do not bother to do it. It may help to motivate you to get started if you understand why strength training is so important and all the ways it can help you look better and feel better. 1. It helps you lose excess body fat - When you get stronger, you build lean muscle tissue which is more metabolically active than fat. This has the effect of increasing your metabolism (your body's engine) which means you will be burning more calories throughout the day and night permanently which will burn off that fat. 2. It makes you strong in all areas of your life - Everything becomes a little easier, working, exercising, housework and gardening, challenging tasks and activities and even sports. As muscles are attached to bones when you make your muscles stronger, it makes your bones stronger too which can help reduce or even manage osteoporosis. 3. It reduces risk of injury - Strength training exercise strengthens everything, not just your muscles and bones. It strengthens connective tissue - the ligaments and tendons that keep your body moving well and will help you continue to operate in peak condition and protect your body from injuries. 4. Reduce arthritis pain - Strengthening muscles helps to support, cushion and protect the joints during impact activities like walking. Modern physical therapy programs incorporate strength training exercise to help rehab a multitude of injuries, which proves that strengthening exercise can make a big difference in recovering from illness or injury and having a better quality of life. 5. It increases balance, stability and flexibility - When we don't preserve muscle mass with strength training, we lose muscle tissue which is what most often leads to weight gain and loss of balance and flexibility. Working your muscles also works your joints through a full range of motion, keeping them strong and flexible and pain free.. 6. Reduce your risk of disease - When you strengthen your body you strengthen all of its systems and processes including the immune system helping reduce your risk of serious life threatening disease. 7. Being strong makes you feel better about yourself - Becoming stronger helps build confidence and improve body image. It can also help manage symptoms of depression, anxiety and deals with stress in a healthy way. 9. It adds challenge and interest to your fitness routine- If you have just been doing the same 'cardio' workouts for a long time, it can get boring to your mind and body. Strength training is a great way to spice things up and add a completely different challenge to your body offering better results. There is always something new to try and you will never run out of a variety of ways to work your body. 10. It makes your whole life better - One thing that often surprises people after they start a strength training program is how it trickles into other areas of their lives. When you get the benefits of all of the above you will scarcely believe how much of a difference it can make to your life. Simple things like being able to work in the garden without back pain, or having more energy to do more things in the day, or even managing stress better. Just 2-3 sessions each week will give you a much better quality of life and allow you to enjoy it more, which is what we all really want isn't it?
