2011-01-13

Dental veneers are custom-designed shells of tooth-like ceramic material. When applied over the surface of your tooth, veneers can cover worn tooth enamel, uneven tooth alignment or spacing, and chips or cracks. The translucent quality of veneers, allows you to maintain a more natural look than what has been previously available. There is no reason to put up with gaps in your teeth or teeth that are badly stained. By simply placing a veneer on the top of your teeth, your imperfections in your teeth can easily be corrected, helping you to create a beautiful smile.

What are Veneers?

Veneers are made of ultra-thin shells of ceramic or composite resin materials, and are bonded to the front of your teeth. The procedure for placement of your veneers requires little to no anesthesia, which makes it an ideal choice for improving the appearance of your front teeth.

With dental veneers, you can experience the following advantages:
• Natural tooth appearance
• Gum tissue tolerates porcelain well
• The color of a porcelain veneer can be selected in order to make dark teeth appear whiter
• Offer a conservative approach to change a tooth's color and shape

Dental Veneers Process

Always make sure that you take an active role in the design of your reconstructive smile. Working closely with your dentist, your teeth are prepared for the veneers by being lightly buffed to allow for the small additional thickness created by the veneer. Generally, about a millimeter of your tooth is removed. The removal may require a local anesthetic to avoid any pain.

Composite resin veneers tend to be completed in one appointment and after the tooth is prepared, your dentist will carefully bond and sculpt the composite material onto your teeth. In regards to ceramic veneers, a mold is first taken of your teeth and then sent out to a dental laboratory for fabrication. This process may take a few days, and your dentist may apply a temporary veneer to your teeth in the meantime.

When your veneers are ready, your dentist will place each veneer on your teeth to make sure they properly fit. In addition, your dentist will match the shade and color of your teeth to your veneer for optimal enhancement. To apply your veneer, your dentist will clean your tooth and apply special cement between the veneer and tooth to bond the two together.

A consultation with your Islip dentist will allow for a proper treatment plan to be created in order to fully restore your smile the way that you have always desired. As with other procedures, veneers are not for everyone, but your dentist will work with you to create an appropriate treatment plan to restore your smile.
