Actually, it takes a whole lot of abuse to seriously damage your voice to the point of no return. But if you are just singing in your living room or doing your daily exercises you will lose what you set out to gain: becoming a professional quality singer and performer. You need to get out there and do it. Are you really interested in becoming a good singer, or is singing just another unimportant activity you dabble in? You really need to ask yourself this question. Then, ask yourself why you answered as you did. If you answered that singing is relatively unimportant in your life, think about this: probably the reason you feel this way is because you feel you aren't good at it. If that's the case, ask yourself this: "If I could really sing well, would it make my life more enjoyable?" If singing could make your life more enjoyable, then do it, regardless of the way you sound right now. Buy yourself some karaoke tracks (they're available on the web or at your local music store) of some songs you like to sing. Then, instead of just listening to the original artist try singing without their help, using the karaoke track. When you run into problems refer back to the original artist's recording. Begin only with one or two songs and stick with them until you feel comfortable singing alone. Then try recording yourself, listening back and making improvements. When you listen to yourself, examine ways to improve, and try again. What's next? Take your two songs to the nearest karaoke club for a tryout. Once you get yourself going you'll find it hard to stop. When going to sing karaoke, be prepared. Know what you are going to sing, learn and practice-including the moves you are going to make. (You're not just going to stand up there like a stick with a mic, are you?) While you are waiting for your turn, pay attention to those "special" singers who really get everyone's attention. Are they stuck to the tv screen, or do they know the lyrics well enough to actually sing to the audience? Look around for places to sing. Most sporting events are looking for singers to do the National anthem. Practice singing it, and submit a recording. Nursing homes and retirement homes love to have visiting entertainers, and provide a great non-pressure atmosphere for the singer who is just beginning to perform. Opportunities are all around for you to perform. But you have to move out of your comfort zone and start looking. Don't let a party go by without singing a couple of songs. Sing for your family. It sounds strange, but most singers have more nervousness singing for a small group of friends and family than for large groups. Put yourself out there.
