There is no reason why you should have to put up with or deal with gaps in your teeth or teeth that are stained, badly shaped or crooked. Today, placing a veneer on top of your teeth can correct natural blemished or injuries to help you achieve a beautiful smile again. Dental veneers fall under the category of cosmetic dentistry because they create a bright, white smile with beautifully aligned, shapely teeth. The translucent ceramic quality of today's veneers provides a more natural look than what has been available in the past. Regardless of what causes unattractive teeth, dental veneers may solve most or even all of your cosmetic dental issues. What Problems do Dental Veneers Fix? Porcelain veneers can mask undesirable defects, such as teeth stained by wear and tear, by an injury, or as a result of a root-canal procedure, and are ideal for masking discolored fillings in front teeth. Patients with gaps between their front teeth or teeth that are chipped or worn may consider porcelain veneers as a solution to their teeth. Veneers are also routinely used to fix the following: • Teeth that are discolored either because of root canal treatment, or the presence of large resin fillings that have discolored the tooth. • Teeth that are worn down • Teeth that are chipped or broken • Teeth that are misaligned, uneven, or irregularly shaped • Teeth with gaps between them Veneers Procedure Getting dental veneers requires multiple visits to make and apply the veneers. One tooth or many teeth can simultaneously undergo the veneering process. During the tooth preparation visit the teeth are lightly buffed to allow for the small added thickness of the veneer. Usually, about a half a millimeter of the tooth is removed, which may require a local anesthetic. At this visit, a mold is taken of your teeth and sent to the laboratory for fabrication of your veneers. The final visit is when the veneers are bonded to your tooth surface with water or glycerin to check their fit and get a sense of the shade or color needed. While the veneers are resting on your teeth, they can be adjusted with various shades of bonding materials to match the color of your teeth. To apply, the tooth is cleansed with specific chemicals to achieve a bond. Once the special cement is placed between the veneer and tooth, a visible light beam, or laser, causes a catalyst to be released, hardening the cement. It is important to brush and floss your teeth daily to properly maintain your veneers. After one or two weeks, you will return for a follow-up appointment. Porcelain veneers are reasonable facismiles of natural teeth, but not perfect replacements. It is not uncommon to see slight variations in the color of porcelain veneers upon close inspection, as this occurs even in your natural teeth.
