2008-09-12

People need self storage space for different reasons. Self storage space may be located in one's home, as additional storage space, or it can be located off-site, on someone else's premises. The type of self storage needed depends very much on the situation at hand. For example, you may have sold off your house, and you now require some space to store your belongings for the time being until your new house is ready. You have two options.

The first option is to find a temporary space at a friend's or relative's house. This is a convenient option, and usually, friends and relatives are more than happy to oblige. However, there are some drawbacks.

For instance, if you have too many things to store, your items may bring inconvenience to your friends or relatives. Besides, if the storage space is not a proper storage facility, there won't be proper security measures. In other words, your belongings are at risk of being lost to theft or fire. So what proper security measures are there?

When you store your belongings in a proper storage facility, access is usually restricted to only one person - you. There are many ways to restrict access to outsiders. In the market, there are many different types of locks, and some are more secure than others. Usually, those who are in this business will be able to recommend you the right types of locks to use. Some locks are harder to pick than others. You may need some professional advice in this aspect.

Besides lock and key, there are more advanced security tools that restrict access. Some facilities come with swipe cards and passwords. You need to have both the swipe card and the password in order to be granted access. This method of securing the facility is way better than the traditional lock and key.

But malicious criminals looking to do harm may get creative. For example, they may open the storage facility simply by working on the hinges of the doors, thereby leaving the locks intact. So the locks are actually useless. Therefore, it is important to have CCTV security cameras installed in the storage facility so that whatever happens in the facility can be captured on video. Fake security cameras can also be installed in the vicinity to help deter those who are planning to do harm.

Although advanced and sophisticated, all the above are useless if the storage facility goes up in flames. As an added security measure, smoke detectors should be installed. When activated, the fire alarm will sound and water sprinklers can be activated to help put out the fire or prevent the fire from spreading.

As you can see, there are many different types of security measures available. Sometimes, it is better to put your belongings in a professional storage facility than a temporary storage space located at a friend's house. You pay a little more but you get peace of mind.
