2011-04-08

Do you avoid dental visits because of your fear or anxiety? If so, you are not alone. The Academy of General Dentistry estimates that approximately 40 million Americans postpone dental treatment because of dental phobia. Your dentist in Raleigh is able to provide you with a soothing, comfortable environment in which you can relax and get the dental care you need with sedation dentistry.

What is Sedation Dentistry?

Sedation dentistry involves the use of anesthesia during treatment to put patients into a relaxed state, almost like sleep. It is often used during procedures that require an extensive amount of time in the treatment chair, and is ideal for patients who experience dental phobia or have difficulty controlling their movements. Many forms of sedation are used to alleviate anxiety or put patients in a sleep-like state, so that little is felt or remembered from the procedure.

Sedation dentistry techniques include:
* Oral conscious sedation
* Intravenous sedation
* Nitrous oxide

There are different types and degrees of dental sedation available. The sedation dentistry technique recommended by your dentist will depend upon the treatment being performed and the degree of your dental anxiety. Your dentist will be able to tell you if you are a candidate for moderate sedation with oral sedatives or nitrous oxide, or deep sedation with intravenous medication.

What is "Pill" Sedation?

If your dentist has approved the use of pill sedation, you will be given a small pill to take an hour prior to your dental appointment. You will need to be driven to and from your appointment with your Raleigh dentist since the pill will make you extremely drowsy. Upon your arrival to the office, you will be escorted to a comfortable dental chair where your dentist will perform all necessary procedures. Although sedation dentistry is considered to be very safe, during the time that you are under sedation, your dentist and his or her assistant will monitor your vital signs to make sure that all is going as planned and that you are never in any danger.

Upon completion of dental procedures, your designated driver will be able to drive you back home where you will continue to rest and relax. You may not remember any of the sounds or activities associated with your dental treatment afterwards and will be able to continually relax for up to several hours.

Nitrous Oxide (Laughing Gas)

Also known as laughing gas, this is a very safe and mild gas that allows people to feel less apprehensive during treatment. This is one of the most commonly used techniques administered by a dentist during conscious sedation. The goal of using nitrous oxide is to eliminate dental anxiety, making you more comfortable while your dentist is able to effectively and efficiently complete your treatment. Nitrous oxide is used by dentists as a sedation method for simple tooth extractions, root canals, dental inlays, oral surgery and other various options.

If you are ready to visit your Raleigh dentist and are interested in sedation dentistry, contact your dentist's office to make your appointment. Sedation dentistry provides you the comfort and relaxation you need to receive appropriate dental treatment.
