Latest Breaking News - Health - Viewing: Secret Woman's Stuff - Being Too Busy Can Lead To Becoming Overweight And Depressed

2010-11-21

In our busy sometimes stressful world woman often try and take on too much. Too much doing, caring, being, helping and worrying about others can take its toll on them. The prolonged stress that many women put up with can take its toll as the stress hormone cortisol is continually in high levels in their bodies.

People who are very busy often put themselves on the back burner and neglect important self-care strategies like proper exercise, healthy eating and enough sleep as their 'busyness' keeps them well....busy.

When these three factors, stress, not enough healthy nourishing food and not enough proper exercise combine a change can occur to the metabolism. Hormones become un-balanced and a cycle called 'metabolic syndrome' develops that if left unchecked can affect ones quality of life.

The first thing that happens is that weight gain occurs and this is shown in a waist measurement of over 35 inches (40 for men). Weight gain causes increased abdominal fat deep inside the body. This is not ordinary fat like on the hips or thighs; it wraps itself around major organs and releases harmful chemicals that change the body's chemistry.

This nasty abdominal fat is a pre-runner to heart disease, diabetes and even cancer and now the experts are saying that having 'metabolic syndrome' and its major sign - an increased waistline is also a factor in mental and emotional health.

Women (men sometimes too) that feel depressed, angry and tense and do not tolerate stress very well, are overweight are often somewhere along the track to having or developing 'metabolic syndrome'. The problem builds on itself as the worse one feels and more unhappy the less able they are to do something positive about the situation.

So, we can arrive at a much bigger problem than just the physical side of being overweight as it can cause mental and emotional issues as well from the chemical imbalances that disturb the metabolism. If we are already riding on the edge with our 'busyness' we can be unknowingly be heading down a dangerous path that will affect our health both in the short term and the long term.

But you can grab control back. Firstly you need to get yourself started on a proper exercise program which will reduce stress in many ways. Just a couple of strength training sessions each week are all that is needed as it is such an efficient form of working your entire body in a very short time.

You do not need to do long duration endurance activity but if you have time and enjoy it think of it as an extra. Just do not replace your muscle strengthening exercises with low intensity recreational activity.

Next ditch as much processed food from your life as possible. These foods are full of chemicals that only add to the hormonal issues. Up and down blood sugar, increased food cravings and being undernourished while consuming too many calories are all you will get from processed and refined foods. Go back to natural whole foods and cook them from scratch and watch your overall health improve.

You will be of little use to anyone if your health deteriorates to the point where you are at risk of a major health problem. You may have to consider putting yourself first for a change, as if truly care about others the greatest gift you can give them is that your own health and well-being is in top shape.
