2009-08-16

Sometimes we wonder if the time we spend on exercising is really worth the effort. On days when we are busy and pushed for time we are tempted to put our workout on hold. We reason with ourselves that we will get back to it tomorrow, or the day after tomorrow or maybe the day after that when things settle down.

A few weeks go by and it becomes much more difficult to get restarted on our exercise program that we know in our heart should be an essential part of our life. In fact we know the benefits only accrue to those who make it a regular and lifelong commitment.
Sometimes a reminder of the many health benefits offered by exercise helps us reconfirm its importance for the quality of our life and will help motivate us to get back on track.

1. An exercise program that contains mostly strength training helps control body weight and is essential in any weight-loss program. Muscle toning exercise increases the metabolism (the body's engine) so we burn more calories every minute of the day and night. This allows us to either lose excess body fat or eat more food without worrying about gaining weight. Since a history of repeated yo yo weight loss and weight gain can be harmful to your health, slow but sure weight loss that stays off is the best way to go.

2. In many ways, exercise is the antidote to getting older. Proper exercise (muscle toning) can slow the loss of energy, stamina, strength, flexibility, bone density and general enthusiasm and zest for living and being active that seems to go with getting older. Done properly strength training can shave 10 -20 or more years of disuse off your body enabling you to perform everyday activities and tasks much easier.

3. When you strengthen your entire body you also strengthen all of the systems and processes including your immune system. This helps resist chronic lifestyle disease' such as heart disease, cancer and diabetes and at least 50 others which are so prevalent in our world today.

Becoming an active person gives you more fun choices in your life. As strength and fitness improves, activity becomes easier, and you are more likely to go out for a hike, or enjoy a day of skiing or some other vigorous enjoyable activity.

4. Maybe best of all, your exercise program can make you happy and is a great way to blow off the stress, anxiety, and tension of the day. You will also sleep like a stone at night as your body demands high-quality sleep to recover from your workouts.

Studies show that you will be less likely to suffer from depression, an ailment that clouds people lives making them feel miserable. And you will simply feel good about yourself. Strong, toned muscles make people ooze confidence and live comfortably in their bodies improving everything from posture to attitude to having more balance in your life.

So, get started or restarted on your exercise program. No one ever regrets spending this tiny bit of time on self care. Just ask anyone who does it.
