The verdict is out - most people do not do enough proper exercise which in itself is unsurprising, but the experts say our levels of inactivity have become so bad that we are directly threatening our health. The number one bio-marker of the aging process is loss of muscle tissue which goes on to cause the weakening of not only our muscles but our bones and joints as well. Every other system in the human body then becomes less efficient as our body downgrades from lack of use. Yet our strength is what makes our life more enjoyable and easier in every way. Working, exercising, carrying things, sport, challenging tasks and leisure activities can be undertaken so our life is full and varied. Some people do low-intensity or light activity such as walking or gardening but this is not enough to give marked exercise benefits. Ineffective exercise does not produce desired improvements in strength and fitness, only frustration that it is a waste of time. Then one is left with the conclusion that 'exercise does not work for me'. One of the reasons for this is that people who do not know what they are talking about suggest that anything from bird watching to playing with the kids is exercise and to just find something you enjoy and that is all you need to do to get your quota of activity. To get the true anti-aging and meaningful benefits exercise has to engage the muscular system and stimulate the release of 'growth and repair' hormones to keep your body young. Anything less will not work. Short intense bouts of activity such as when you perform strength training exercise loads the muscles and challenges them which is the stimulus to get the body to renew itself. As we get older our body produces fewer of the hormones that allow us to repair and rejuvenate ourselves. Working our muscles directly coaxes our body to produce more 'youth' hormones than are normally produced. These hormones are in direct opposition to the aging process which keeps our muscles, bones and body organs from degenerating as fast as they would without proper exercise. With continued challenging activity the degeneration process is slowed down and we retain our youthfulness much longer. We each have a choice about how we wish to grow older. We can either surrender to the downward spiral in the functioning of our body and health or we can take control, get active and grow stronger and more energetic. Just 2-3 sessions each week of a strength training program will work wonders in off-setting the aging process. The ideas is not to spend a lot of time doing it but make it intense (degree of effort used) and get the most effectiveness in the shortest time frame. Putting that effort into your exercise program will help more than anything else for you to continue to hold on tight to your youthful looks, your strength, vigor and vitality for as long as you possibly can.
