Is one of your teeth broken? Has a tooth become significantly weakened by excess decay or an especially large filling? If so, a crown might be the ideal solution to repairing and protecting your damaged tooth. No one ever wants to lose or damage a tooth, but weakened by a fracture or a large filling, a tooth might not withstand even the simplest activities such as eating. By maintaining or restoring your bite and smile, the effects of tooth damage or loss can be reversed by your dentist with dental crowns. Porcelain Crowns If your tooth decay or dental damage is too extensive for veneers, direct composite bonding or other conservative treatments are not viable treatment options; your dentist may consult you about dental crowns. Whether the dental crowns are used to restore a damaged tooth or to create a lifelike tooth replacement for an implant, crowns can be fabricated in your dentist's office for a one visit restoration. Dental crowns are synthetic caps, usually made of porcelain, placed on the top of a tooth. They are a restoration that covers a tooth to restore it to its normal shape and size, which strengthens and improves the appearance of your damaged tooth. When your tooth is broken down and fillings are unable to solve your problem, crowns are necessary in order to restore function to your tooth. All porcelain crowns are used in order to eliminate any grey lines around crowns that are normally seen in other brands. Porcelain crowns are the best choice in restoring your smile without creating significant difference in appearance between your other teeth. There are also porcelain-fused-to-metal crowns that provide a strong, durable and esthetic treatment option. The Procedure Before having your tooth fitted for a crown, your dentist will begin with a thorough examination and discuss the options for treatment with you. Once a proper treatment plan has been created, the damaged tooth will be prepared for the crown by giving it a thorough cleaning. The cleaning serves to remove any decay. After the preparation of your tooth is complete, a mold will be taken of your teeth with dental putty. The mold is then sent to a dental laboratory where the impression of your tooth will be used as a basis to create your crown, which typically takes a couple weeks. It is typical to be fitted with a temporary crown to protect the tooth while you wait for your custom made crown. Once the crown is created, your dentist will replace the temporary crown with your permanent, custom-made crown. After making sure the crown properly fits the tooth, your dentist will permanently bond the crown to your damaged tooth. It is advised that you avoid grinding your teeth and also avoid chewing hard foods or ice as it may damage or fracture the crown. If you are experiencing a problem with your tooth, crowns may not always be the best option.
