Thirty years after it started, the fitness revolution has evolved into a health revolution and now proper exercise is considered an essential part of 21st Century life. This is to replace the removal of any activity from our lives that even resembles the 'work' that our ancestors did every single day in order to survive Our bodies need this movement to stay healthy but we tend to ignore this fact to our peril.

We must stop thinking that exercise is an 'option'. The first and most important obstacle to conquer if you want to get and stay healthy is to stop negotiating the issue of exercise with yourself. Devoting a small portion of each day to your strength and fitness is not a luxury but a must – the same way you brush your teeth or take a shower.

It is simply not negotiable. If you chose not to bother know that you will have a 95% chance of getting a 'chronic lifestyle disease' sometime in your life time. These diseases include the 'big three' heart disease, cancer and diabetes along with more than 50 others.

What you need to do first before you can expect any results such as weight loss or improved body shape is develop an exercise habit. It could just mean that once a week you perform a proper exercise program that contains mostly strength training exercise. Once you have this once a week session firmly embedded in your life then it is easy to add a second and even a third session.

Many people start out with the intention of going to the gym 4 or 5 times each week and wonder why they fail miserably and crash and burn. Strength training exercise (done properly) is so effective that a little goes a long way. If you are taught by a fitness professional how to train intensely (degree of difficulty) enough to stimulate the hormones necessary to build you a lean and strong body just 2-3 sessions of 45 minutes or so is all it takes each week.

Forget wasting your time with long, slow, recreational activities like walking, jogging or cycling. These are 'fun' activities you can save for your active leisure time. Just don't ever expect to replace a proper exercise program with low intensity activities or you will be very disappointed with your results.

You can get all of the 'cardio' benefits from a properly performed strength training program. Just try putting a bar with 80 or 90 pounds on it and start squatting up and down and see what happens to your heart rate.

Your exercise program needs to take all of your major muscle groups through their full range of motion. This will give you huge health benefits such as an increase in your metabolism, (your body's engine) to burn off excess body fat create more energy and make you feel fantastic.

Becoming stronger gives one a boost in the way you feel about yourself and your life. The increase in the quality of your life is one that you can scarcely imagine. You will wonder why you didn't get started sooner.
