Proms are very exciting events for teens everywhere. This is the night that they wait for throughout the their final year and they also see it as a chance to finally get some freedom and have some fun. While it is a good thing to let them have their fun, dangerous things like alcohol and drugs have become a nuisance at such events. Your kids will most definitely ask you not to go around watching over them and making them uncomfortable around their friends. They may throw a tantrum but you have to make them realize that prom safety is a very serious issue and not everyone will be unsupervised like they think. The important thing is to communicate with them on their level. If you are high handed and make them feel as if you will not listen to them at all, you will only be pushing them further away. Instead, try and make them understand the reasons behind your actions. In today's age, your kids already know a lot through the media and the Internet. So it is possible that you do not have to explain too many things to them. But you must keep the lines of communication open between them and you. Also, you have to listen to what they have to say. This is very important because they must not get the feeling that they have no say in the matter. Make your family a democracy where everyone has a say in what is going on. And since your kids are directly involved in this, you need to hear them out. You will have more chances to keep them safe if they do not feel alienated by you. You have to be close enough to them to gain their trust. This may come as a shock to you because you think you are their parent and they should listen to you but you have to understand that they are individual human beings and are entering their rebellious phase. They may easily feel far away from you, so you need to take careful steps in order to ensure that you have a friendly and informal relationship with them. You have to explain to them that despite of what they might think, all their friends will not be going out unsupervised because every parent is worried about their child. Tell them that you will not be interfering in what they do and you will just be there to keep them safe. You must actually keep this promise and not do anything unless you think something is going wrong. Let them have their freedom because you can't keep them safe forever and they must learn to take action on their own as well. This way, you can make your kids understand why supervision is important and why it is in their own interest. By having a healthy relationship with your kids you can ensure that you get through to them without starting world war 3 at home.
