2010-07-30

For those who do not already own one, BMX bikes are the latest and hottest sport bike design around. Their origins date back to the early seventies when kids residing in the southern California area began to ride their bikes off the road in more challenging terrain. Again, near the nineteen eighties kids began to take over the streets with daring stunts and acrobatics. This non-traditional movement is known today as freestyle BMX. This form of bike riding is comprised of several disciplines, one of them being Trails.

Trails is basically a rough track with random heaps of compacted mud categorized by packs, such as 6 or 8 pack meant to be jumped over with a bike. When approaching a jump the rider will encounter a take off ramp commonly known as a Lip, and another smaller heap for landing. These jumps are categorized depending on their size. They are measured horizontally from the top take-off lip to the top of the landing lip. The gap in between will determine the size of the jump, usually around twelve feet. Some jumps can measure as much as twenty feet from lip to lip.

This kind of Freestyle BMX riding is also known as Dirt Jumping. BMX bikes customized for Trails usually do not have a front brake installed; brakes may only be found at the back with an installed gyro to make it easier to do barspins. Customization for this discipline may also include a larger wheel base than other bikes in the sport. When picking out a bike for this activity make sure to pick one light enough. A heavy bike will be harder to wheelie of the ramp, and will travel a shorter distance once up in the air.
In order to train for this discipline novice riders must begin by getting a good feel of their bike, learning to balance it in mid air. It is a good idea to start with smaller jumps in order to learn the mechanics of landing your BMX bike on the opposing lip. Longer and higher jumps will encumber higher speeds and landing force, thus, like an airplane you will need to really learn how to balance you bike properly for a smooth landing.

Tips for beginners include the use of online bike games to get a glimpse of the mechanics of jumping, and it should look like. Online BMX games are free to play and include special commands for each type of jump. When you balance your character in a BMX game online, you will be hinted of the balancing procedure required for the real thing. Last but not least, remember to always use your protective gear. Even the best of the best take their protective gear seriously. These include helmet, knee and elbow pads and perhaps a mouth piece depending on the audacity of the jump.
