Latest Breaking News - Health - Viewing: Pre Signs Heart Attack

2010-02-24

Preliminary signs of a heart attack are quite elusive and different for men than they are for women. These signs are prodromal symptoms. They might occur as far as two years before the coronary event but are normally from one week to six months before a heart attack.

The most important of these symptoms is shortness of breath. It's one of the easiest to recognize for both men and women. While many people shrug off the symptom, it could be reason for serious concern. A study of close to 18000 people that included both sexes showed that the people that had shortness of breath prior were three to five times more likely to have fatal heart disease. It is a good indicator that something is wrong.

Other symptoms that often precede a coronary event include sleep disturbances. Statistics from the National Institute of Health showed that almost 48 percent of the women that had coronary events experienced sleep disturbances prior to their heart attack.

The most common symptom in women, according to the same study, was unusual fatigue. Women included in the report experienced this symptom 70 percent of the time. Unusual fatigue is often sloughed off as too much pressure, coming down with a bug or other insignificant event, but when experienced with other symptoms, check with your doctor.

Indigestion is often a symptom of an impending heart attack in disguise. Again, this type of symptoms when combined with tightness in the chest or difficulty breathing needs your attention. Approximately 39 percent of the people that later had coronaries, had indigestion as a symptom first. This doesn't meant that every time you have gas or an upset stomach, you're about to have a heart attack. However, if you notice other symptoms of coronary distress at the same time, take heed.

Anxiety or the feeling that something isn't right is another potential symptom that you might be a candidate for a coronary. However, if you're the type of person that suffers from anxiety attacks normally, you may simply be experiencing another. The only way to find out is to schedule a doctor's appointment.

Pain in the chest, particularly in men, is the most recognized indicator of heart problems. While the pain may feel like a pressure or band of pressure around the chest, it also can be a stabbing pain in the middle of the chest. If you have chest pain that radiates to pain in the upper back, jaw or shoulder, particularly the left shoulder, see a physician immediately.

As with any type of illness, the sooner you seek help and receive treatment, the less severe the damage. In many cases, immediate action prevents a coronary event and saves your life. Learn to recognize the warning symptoms. Remember, women tend to have more atypical pre signs of a heart attack than men. However, pain in the chest, regardless of the sex of the individual is a warning that something isn't functioning properly.
