Latest Breaking News - Health - Viewing: Our Waistlines Are Widening But Many Of Us Are In Denial

2010-06-20

The silly idea that being overweight is okay is one of the most misguided beliefs a person can possess towards their health and wellness. Many people tend to think it is just an appearance issue when it is actually a medical issue because being overweight can seriously affect a person's quality of life along with their health.

The development of metabolic syndrome is one of the greatest threats of being overweight which is closely linked to a group of risk factors that lead to heart disease and other chronic health problems. Among these risk factors are excess abdominal fat, high blood pressure, high blood sugars and fats.

It is believed that a cause of becoming overweight is insulin resistance which is a condition in which the body cannot use its insulin properly. Insulin is the hormone that instructs body cells to take up glucose when the levels are too high but when the cells can not take up any more glucose they shut their receptors down leaving high levels circulating in the blood.

More and more insulin is pumped out by the pancreas to try and force the cells to accept the glucose but they refuse. This leaves blood sugar levels high along with high insulin levels which circulate around the body threatening damage to sensitive cells and tissues. So the body converts much of the excess glucose into body fat and sends it to the storage sites where it cannot harm the body.

If you added a proper exercise program into your life that contained mostly strength training exercise a lot more glucose could be used by the muscles instead of remaining in the body. Fuel (calories) is burnt for energy in the muscles so the more they are used the more glucose is taken from the blood stream. Burning it up harmlessly is a lot better for long term health than more weight gain.

So, a simple strength training program can decrease your body's resistance to insulin that leads to becoming overweight which then exposes you to all sorts of health risks. For the past 30 odd years exercise research focused exclusively on what happened during an exercise session and ignored the after effects.

Now we know what goes on during exercise and the type of exercise performed directly impacts whether the body burns or stores fuel long after the session has finished. In fact, the after effects of exercise may be the most important aspect of preventing a person from becoming overweight. Working your muscles directly is the way to do this not endurance type activities that are too low an intensity (degree of work load for the muscles.)

By toning up muscle tissue with proper strength training exercise the metabolic rate is raised so more fuel is being burnt every single minute of the day and night. This is your ticket to getting slim and staying slim. But you need to keep being consistent with your exercise program. Stop and your body will become soft and flabby again. But surely the price is not too high for the much envied strong, fit, slim healthy body that you will have.
